We are still in crisis mode with our dear Oliver. 😞 It has now been 36 hours since Ellen found him down and unable to stand. He's been receiving round-the-clock care, and we are incredibly grateful for the kindness of the community that has coalesced around New Moon Farm Sanctuary. Once again, Dr. Krystal spent her day off here - her kindness and generosity leaves us speechless. The support we've had over the past days from Krystal, John, Dana, Jeni, Bud, Carol and Gretchen has been wonderful.
Ollie is still unable to stand on his own. He is bright eyed, eating, drinking, etc, but very weak and exhausted. We still aren't completely sure what is going on, but suspect it could be Polioencephalomalacia, a neurological disease that affects the central nervous system of goats. The remedy for PEM is Thiamine, so he's been getting lots of that, along with pain meds and electrolytes. This afternoon we used an engine hoist with an assemblage of cinches, ropes, towels and a fence stretcher, to lift him up on his feet. We massaged his legs with towels and kept repositioning his feet under him to get him to try and hold himself up, which he did for brief moments. After about 40 minutes we eased him back down. The plan is to keep giving him thiamine, and lift him up again later this evening and into tomorrow.
Ollie is bright eyed (though tired), eating and drinking, so we're not going to give up on him. Please send your healing love (and donations) his way.
