Good sniffing little beagle.

On January 20, Philadelphia CBP K9 "Harrie" alerted CBP Office of Field Operations agriculture specialists to nearly 17lbs of citrus with leaves and another 6lbs of persimmons across three pieces of luggage. The citrus leaves had a hitchhiking snail along for the flight.

Nice work!

The greatest work of art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston may have a short steel-gray coat, floppy ears and four legs. Since 2018, Riley the Weimaraner has been hard at work sniffing out pests that could be destructive to the priceless artwork that comes in and out of the museum. Riley's trainers have used positive reinforcement — treats, toys, a clicker and praise — to reward him for good behavior and a job well done as he's slowly but surely become an indispensable member of the MFA family.

Nicki Luongo, the MFA's director of protective services and Riley’s full-time human: "They are a lot of work, but I love Weims. They're high energy. And with kindness, they are one of the most loving and hardworking and loyal dogs I think I've ever had." https://bit.ly/3RttEvd

Amazing!

Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dog's nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale, if we exhale out our mouths.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog's nostrils doesn't get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let's use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: If our eyes were our nose, what we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

Just wow.

How you start your dog can make an enormous difference. If there is one on the list you don’t follow, give it a try and see how ot goes.

START LINE PROCEDURES
All too often as I judge I cringe while watching handlers at the start line
The easiest way to explain the main items that make me cringe is by listing bullet points
1. NO equipment changes
a. Too many times I watch teams search with the same leash and collar that they just got done taking a potty break with
b. Contextually Equipment changes even a simple as a different leash provide information or lets the pup know its time to search versus go for another potty break
2. SMOTHERING AND THE KISS KISS GAME
a. Your pup is getting ready to do a giant math problem and they are getting their game face on and all of a sudden MOM is all in their face with “ oh ilove you so much and you’re the smartest doggy every” Trust me I see pups walk up tail wagging ears up and all ready to go to work and then I see the smother kissy kissy sequence start the tail drops ears go back and the body just because tense – reminds me of my grandma pinching my check at Christmas every year--- Love Grandma hated to great her for the first time every time
3. Rushing into the search area with your pup
a. You have a 10,12 or longer leash on take advantage of it don’t rush into the search area with your dog, couple of reasons 1. From the beginning your telling your dog you are doing the search,2. Your creating wasted energy 3. More disruption of the wind currents
b. You have that nice long leash let it slide out with the pup as he or she enters the search area once adequately into the area enough you can then join .. this also let you see better what your dog is doing
4. CONTROL FREAK
a. Pup is all motivated to go into the search area and BAM SIT—this changes the focus right back to Mom or Dad
b. Just let them stand or laydown or sit if they choose to but don’t give them an obedience command to make their focus back on Mom or Dad
5. NOT Watching your dog at the start line
a. All too many times have I seen the dog have odor from the start line but Mom or Dad have not seen it
b. Worst scenario the handler holds the dog back because they want to search the threshold first but the dog has a hide in the back of the room and is showing change from the start line
