Last week was hard… In five days, I lost four horses that I had worked on for 10+ and in some cases 20 years. I loved them all very fiercely. All of them would stand at liberty to get their feet done in a wide open pasture for me. They were all horses I looked forward to seeing on my schedule for the day because they reminded me why I do this job and how awesome that connection can feel. I will miss them. Sky, Skip, Legs, and Tango, you are forever in my heart. 💜🌈

Oh yes, that’s very helpful, thank you Paco. Big Ruby has her try hard face on because when you’re in your late thirties and this big with arthritis it takes a lot of try to get your feet done… and she tries so hard and a so kind. Even though little buddy can’t hold her up physically he’s there in full support.

This is the face I make when what seems impossible becomes possible with the magic of connection. I recently had the pleasure and honor to work on a new group of intakes at Save A Forgotten Equine - SAFE, as I often do. All had very overgrown feet, most were aloof but moderately handleable. But one mare… I named her Frida, was very defensive and I was told a meet and greet was all I could probably do (a fair assesment) as she had been very defensively aggressive about being touched… biting, striking, shoulder in push bolting. I spent about 30 minutes alone with her getting her permission to touch her and explaining about her and my boundaries and how we would communicate them. We came to an agreement. And then she stood quietly as I did all four very neglected long toe, negative palmar angle feet with a soft quiet handler and conscientious use of cookies. The first picture in this group of photos was as I stepped away after her last foot with a huge smile on my face BUT the best part of this picture is her gaze following me as I walked away saying, “wait friend… we could spend more time together”. ❤️
This is the magic…. Gaining permission and understanding through trust. She welcomed me easily the second time I saw her and was “almost” like a regular horse.

The daily fuzz…
Not sure how I’d get by without it. This may have been after hours and “off the clock” but oh how it keeps me going. Why we do what we do. Also I trimmed a stupid number of horses, donkeys, and mules that day but I wasn’t really complete until I had the goaty odor and topped it off with dinner with one of the most impeccable humans.
