In Loving Memory of Alyce McKenzie Taylor
July 24, 1936 – November 6, 2024
With heavy hearts and abundant gratitude, we celebrate the blessed life of Alyce McKenzie Taylor, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who had the joy of knowing her.
Born on July 24, 1936, in Guadalupe, California, Alyce brought laughter, music, and warmth to this world, leaving a legacy as rich and vibrant as the Santa Maria valley she always called home.
The daughter of Kermitt and Ruth McKenzie, and sister to Kay Gustafson and Max McKenzie, Alyce was preceded in death by her husband, Wally Taylor, and parents and siblings.
She is survived by her five children—Chris Freitas, Eric Freitas, Jon Freitas, Teresa Freitas-Criscione, and Alyson Freitas-Rodges— daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, her 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Alyce was a gifted pianist who could play everything from gospels and show tunes to boogie woogie and rag time. She taught piano lessons and performed with her church band for years.
Her music was more than a melody—it was the soundtrack to her life, woven into every gathering, celebration, and quiet moment.
Her infamous homemade spice cake, crafted with love from scratch, became a signature at every event, a sweet reminder of the warmth and care she poured into every aspect of her life.
Alyce’s gift was her ability to bring joy, and she did so with unmatched humor, wit, and sass. She especially loved to dance, paint, read and sew. Many people over the years (and not just family) were beneficiaries of her sewing prowess…from the riders at Suey Park, to prom dresses, sports outfits, holiday dresses,Christmas Jammie’s and wedding parties. She did the same with crafts as well. She got so much joy from giving these gifts.
