We rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong care for dozens of animals saved from neglect, kill pens and factory farms. All of the animals enjoy healthy food, clean shelter, and lots of room to roam every single day. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and rely on donations to care for our animal friends. At Greener Pastures we teach that all lives matter and even though we all look different on the outside, on the inside we are all the same.

Isn’t Quirky magnificent?! Just look at his beautiful layers of feathers!

Each year, more than 200 million turkeys, just like our precious Quirky, are slaughtered for food in the U.S. They are kept in severely crowded and unsanitary conditions in factory farms. They are given little or no care and denied the chance to engage in many natural behaviors, like nesting, scratching in the grass for food, or perching.

Factory-farmed turkeys are selectively bred to grow to an unnatural size quickly, reaching market weight in just four months. By that age, today’s factory-farmed males are roughly TRIPLE the weight of adult wild male turkeys. This breeding for maximal profit leaves these birds suffering from deformities and heart conditions. Burdened by their body weight, some cannot stand or reach their water and food.

Turkeys are bright, social, and sentient creatures! Turkeys form loving relationships, have unique personalities, and deserve a life free from harm and exploitation. Please consider a cruelty-free Thanksgiving this year. Don’t support the cruel industry.

On Veteran’s Day please pause to consider all of the men, women and animals who bravely sacrificed to serve our country.

Most people don’t think about the devastation to millions of animals who had no choice in participating in war. The animals are the silent heroes, and some were innocent bystanders whose populations were decimated.

Horses
Used by the Americans to carry soldiers into battle and on patrol missions. (The Germans used over 2.5 million horses and mules.)

Mules
Trained in the United States and shipped to war zones, mules carried food, weapons, and sometimes entire infantry units.

Dogs
Used by the U.S. Army, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps, dogs were used for reconnaissance, guarding, and mine detecting. The Coast Guard used almost 2,000 dogs to protect against saboteurs and spies.

Pigeons
The U.S. Military Pigeon Service used
pigeons in every area of armed combat.

Canaries
Used to detect poisonous gas.

Cats and dogs
Trained to hunt rats in the trenches.

Bats
The United States developed bat bombs, which were dropped at dawn to release bats carrying incendiary bombs.

Elephants
Circus elephants in Hamburg, Germany were used to clear up bomb damage after Allied bombing raids

First World War 1914-18
More than 16 million animals were made to serve on all sides, with nine million killed (including eight million horses, mules and donkeys).

Second World War 1939-45
Over 750,000 domestic pets were killed in Britain in one week following a government public information campaign about their safety and expected food shortages. The German Army on the Eastern Front lost 179,000 horses in two months.

Vietnam War 1955-75
Use of Agent Orange to eliminate forest cover destroyed the habitats of tigers, Asian elephants, gibbons, civets, leopards and other species. At least 40,000 animals were killed by unexploded landmines in the 20 years following the war.

Mozambique Civil War 1977-92
Giraffe and elephant herds in the Gorongosa National Park shrank by 90 per cent.

Iran-Iraq War 1980-88
Populations of wild goats, wolves, otters, pelicans, striped hyenas, river dolphins and other wildlife were wiped out or reached the point of extinction.

Sudanese Civil War 1983-2005
South Sudan's elephant population fell from 100,000 to 5,000.

Afghan War 1990s
Over 75,000 animals were lost due to mines, more than half of the total livestock population.

Gulf War 1990-91
More than 80% of livestock in Kuwait died, including 790,000 sheep, 12,500 cows and 2,500 horses. About 85% of the animals in Kuwait International Zoo died. A deliberate oil leak into the Persian Gulf by Iraqi troops caused the deaths of up to 230,000 aquatic animals and birds.

Did you know that miniature donkeys are naturally mini, but miniature horses were bred to be small?

Although some small prehistoric horses existed, the mini horses we know today are derived from Shetland Ponies crossed with other breeds.

Mini horses were bred for pets of European royalty, while others bred them to work in coal mines.

Mini donkeys, on the other hand, originated in Sicily and Sardinia where they were used as draft animals to carry firewood, deliver fresh bread, pull ore-filled carts from mines and for transportation.

Both breeds are treasured today because of their size and personalities. In some cases they are over-bred and sadly, end up in kill pens.

Throughout history goats have been popular due to their friendly and inquisitive nature. President Abraham Lincoln, known for his soft heart when it came to animals, gave his son Tad a spirited pair of goats named Nanny and Nanko.

They recognized the president’s voice and would bound to his side when they heard him. As typical goats, however, Nanny and Nanko liked to chew things, including flower bulbs and furniture in the White House.

Their shenanigans did not stop there.  Using kitchen chairs as makeshift carts, Lincoln’s sons Tad and Willie often had the goats pull them through the White House. Tad once scattered a group of White House visitors by driving a goat-pulled chair through the East Room crying, “Get out of the way there!” as he went.

You wouldn’t consider eating your dog or cat, yet every piece of meat came from a living breathing animal. An animal with the same capacity for love, feelings, and awareness as dogs and cats. There are so many food options, why do you justify eating sentient beings?

Happy Rescue-versary Henna!!!! This little lady is curious, friendly and so sweet…..And it is her one year anniversary at Greener Pastures!

Sadly, Henna was born to be a “broiler” in a factory farm. She was saved when a kind person noticed she had an eye infection. That caring person took her to a vet and helped her recover.

Henna is now healthy and living happily. We love Henna SO much and count every day with her as a gift.

Our beautiful mare Starlit and her two children Wildfire and Felicity, are lucky to be alive. They came to Greener Pastures from a kill pen in Oklahoma where they were to be slaughtered for meat.

From 2012 to 2016, an average of 137,000 American horses were trucked over our borders each year to slaughter facilities in Mexico and Canada to be killed for human consumption. Until this practice is banned and Congress passes a law against slaughter here in the U.S., no horse is safe.

The USDA documented that 92.3 % of horses sent to slaughter are in good condition and are able to live out a productive life. These horses would be sold, donated or otherwise rehomed; HOWEVER, kill buyers outbid legitimate horse owners and rescues at auctions, robbing horses of ever having a second chance at life.

To reduce the number of homeless or at-risk horses we can curb overbreeding, educate owners about other rehoming options and expand adoption work. The vast majority could be rehomed and live out their natural lives.

As we consider all the precious lives that suffered unnecessarily, we don’t take a single day for granted with our beautiful horse family.

This spunky girl is Kiko goat! She is doing amazingly well considering her horrific past of abuse.

We gave her lots of space and patience in those early days so she would feel safe and learn that she could trust us.

She will never be quite as friendly as our other goats, but that’s okay. She has come so far and we love her for who she is.

Mostly, we are happy that she is safe and will only know kindness for the rest of her days 🧡
