Cover crops help keep our topsoil intact, preventing erosion. It also helps prevent w**ds by competing with them for space and if terminated at the correct time, it can "fix" (create) nitrogen in the soil by replacing the nitrogen that was diminished by the previous season's plants. We will plant most of our cover crop in mid-September, alongside our currently growing plants. Planting in the late summer gives the cover crop seed enough time to germinate before frost. We currently have small areas where our rows are barren, so we are planting our cover crop early in those spaces so they do not become overrun with w**ds or remain naked. We will talk more about cover cropping next month and welcome any questions you might have before then.πŸŒ±πŸ’ **ds

Some flowers are considered β€œdirty” because their stems dirty the water faster than others. Some of these flowers include zinnias, sunflowers, marigolds, dahlias, yarrow, ornamental kale, snapdragons, etc. To help avoid dirty water, we add a bit of bleach to the water in our bucket! πŸ’πŸŒ» **ds

We use as little plastic as possible on the farm, so we use card board and mulch on our pathways and cover crop mulch on our beds. We've been having some issues with terminating the later, so our flowers have really had to struggle to compete with the cover crop. Not ideal. We have thoughts on how to remedy this for next season, but for the moment we're enjoying the satisfying feeling of looking quite buttoned up... after much w**ding and whole lot of cardboard laying. If you're looking for cardboard for your yard/garden/farm projects, bike shops are your best bet. (Usually) they are free of tape and incredibly large, so fewer seams. Our mulch comes from a tree company that I randomly called up and asked if we could take their mulch. They save on the cost and time of taking the load to the landfill, the wood chips stay out of the landfil and we don't pay for another material. Winning all over the place.πŸ’πŸŒ± **ds

Composting tips! We are fortunate enough to have a healthy pile, so we don't have a good visual to show you, but here are some pesty bugs to keep an eye out for.Ants- They can pose an issue with turning your pile if they build their hill in your pile.Spiders- they come for the other bug food, but don't actually do anything to help break your pile down.Mites- Can feed on earthworms (the good guys. If you see them, remove the item that they are on immediately.Flies- Your pile is likely too wet, and has become a breeding ground.Keeping your pile happy and healthy is the best way to get rid of the above bug nuisances. Follow all the tips and rules that we have laid out for you and reach out if you are having any issues. Cheers! **ds

We strive to be as sustainable as possible over here at Crescendum, so it's always been important to us that our wrapped bouquets are fully compostable. Paper, jute and beautiful flowers, that's all you get when you order from us, and all of those items can go into your backyard or commercial compost. Single bouquets are available in our shop, both pickup and delivery and our Late Summer CSA starts this Thursday, Aug. 1st. Link to those in our bio. We hope to get some natural beauty into your hands in the near future!πŸ’πŸ’ **ds
