Karissa is one of the Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) here at Harmony Vet Center. Originally from Southern California, she has been working in veterinary medicine for about seven years. Karissa particularly enjoys working with nervous pets and creating a safe space for patients and their people.

Her journey in veterinary medicine began with a natural inclination to connect with people and their animals, which led her to volunteer at an animal shelter. This experience was followed by an internship at a wildlife center and then a position as a veterinary assistant. After relocating to Colorado, she obtained her LVT certification and eventually joined the team at Harmony Vet.

Outside of work, Karissa engages in activities such as yoga, meditation, and music—she sings and plays guitar. She also enjoys spending time in nature, where she likes to forage.

Everyday household items, foods, and plants can pose a serious threat to your furry friends. Common toxins include chocolate, grapes, xylitol (found in sugar-free gum), certain medications, and even household cleaners. Pet Poison Prevention starts with knowledge—keep harmful substances out of reach, secure trash bins, and be aware of toxic plants. If you suspect poisoning, contact us at Harmony Veterinary Center, 303-432-8551 or a pet poison hotline immediately. A little precaution goes a long way in keeping your pets safe and healthy! In the comments below, feel free to share things that you do to ensure that your pets stay safe and healthy. Our thanks to Lili Chin for creating this memorable guide.

It's important to read ingredients as well as know the different names for familiar ingredients.

Birch Sugar sounds nice and natural, so it must be healthy, right?

For humans, yes. For dogs, not so much.

Birch sugar is Xylitol and it is extremely toxic to dogs. It is a sugar alcohol commonly found in sugar-free gum, peanut butters, ice cream, and other sugar-free human treats.

Just small amounts of Xylitol or Birch Sugar can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and acute liver failure, sometimes resulting in permanent organ damage or death even IF treatment is sought.

A good rule to have is to only feed your dog things meant for dogs. But, if you are going to feed human foods, ALWAYS read the labels. Pet Poison Helpline has a list of toxins here that you can check out if you are uncertain or if your pet accidentally ingests something: https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poisons/

Here is another source of information about Avian Flu and cats.

With everything I’m learning about the spread of bird flu in cats (in large part thanks to my friend, Dr. Julie Levy DVM from The University of Florida and Operation Catnip), I’m glad I’ve got a catio for Mowgli as well as Penelope and Theo.

There is so much more to know, and that’s why I’m posting a new, time-sensitive video today. It’s an interview with Dr. Levy that will cover everything from the history of this bug, how it got to cats, symptoms and how to prevent the spread. Look for me LIVE on TikTok and YouTube around 10:15AM PST before the video premieres at 11! Knowledge is key to preventing the spread!
