So, You Went to Holland to Get a Dog?
"What about just rescuing a mutt at your local shelter?" Well, we tried that. Several years ago when our older kids were asking for a pet, we picked up a cute shaggy dog from our local pound and brought her home. She promptly pooped in my closet, hid under the bed and growled at anyone attempting to lure her out. After several weeks of this, the kids lost heart in ever befriending this dog who wouldn't play with them or even let them pet her, and I got weary of her using my closet instead of the back yard to do her duty. So in spite of signing our life away assuring the pound people that we would keep this dog no matter what, we sneaked off with said dog, now and forever known in family lore as The Dog From Hell, to a neighboring town and surrendered her to their shelter.
Fast forward a few years to 2008 and my youngest kids start asking for a dog (they have clearly forgotten about the Dog From Hell). Now, I know many people have great luck getting fabulous pets from shelters, but my closet and I were wary. We decided to do some research. After watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show on TV with the kids and discussing what we were drawn to in various breeds, we got on the internet and stumbled upon some handy questionnaires meant to help one know which breeds might fit their criteria and lifestyle. Stabyhoun came up more than once. How is it that we had never heard of this breed? Gentle, friendly, intelligent, little grooming needed, great with kids, not too big or too small, little shedding, and beautiful! We wanted one!
Once we started looking into finding a breeder, we realized how the name stabyhoun had eluded us. Very rare, these stabyhouns! But we soon found the ASA, (AmeriCan Stabyhoun Association) and got on their puppy waiting list. I got a call saying that there were no upcoming litters and several people ahead of us on the wait list, but they did have a puppy for us. In Holland. I laughed and said that was not feasible for our family. I hung up the phone and told the family about the call, and my world-traveling daughter, Elizabeth, said, "Mom, lets go to Holland! You have always wanted to go the the Reiksmuseum and see all those Golden-Era-of-Dutch-Art masterpieces you rave about!" She was right. I had studied art history in college and fell in love with the Baroque Dutch painters, especially Rembrandt and Halls.
My frugal, practical side gave way as we began to see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to travel with Elizabeth (who moved to China soon after and has lived there for 5+years now, so good thing I did this when I did), to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine, and to get our family a cherished stabyhoun, who we were sure would be the perfect dog (and she is, she really is!). We called the ASA back and said we would do it.
