PEMBROKE & CARDIGAN WELSH CORGIS - ArkansasCorgis.com
Most people don't know the difference between Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, so let's talk about it.
PHOTOS: These are all Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
HERITAGE: In 1925 Cardigans only existed in Cardiganshire County in Wales, and shared ancestors with German Dachshunds. In 1925 Pembrokes only existed in Pembrokeshire County in Wales, and shared ancestors with Swedish Vallhunds.
BREED CLUBS: In 1925 the first Corgi Club in the world was created in Pembrokeshire for Pembrokes. In 1926 a similar club was created in Cardiganshire for Cardigans. The breeds were registered as Corgis in the United Kingdom, but as either Pembroke or Cardigan type. Each also had different dog shows, and judged by their different breed standards. Both breeds started entering the United States in 1934.
COLORS: Photos include the colors Merle, Brindle, and Black & White. Only Cardigan Welsh Corgis have the genes for these 3 colors. Either breed can be: red, sable, and tri-colored (red, black, & white).
TAILS: Cardigan Welsh Corgis should always have tails. They should never be docked to look like a Pembroke.
BREED SIZES: Cardigans can be upto 12.5" inches tall, while Pembrokes are half an inch shorter. Male Cardigans that are lean should weigh 30-38 lbs, but 27-30 lbs for lean male Pembrokes. Female Cardigans that are lean should be 25-34 lbs, but 25-28 lbs for lean female Pembrokes.
EARS: As seen in the photos, Cardigans have very wide ears. They are much wider than a Pembroke, taller than a Pembrokes, and a bigger round curve at the top.
HAIR: Both breeds are described as having medium length hair. However, Cardigan hair tends to be a little shorter and sleaker than Pembrokes.
HEADS: Cardigans as seen below have a wide boxy appearance with wide cheek bones and wide noses. Pembrokes have a more narrow chiseled foxy shaped head and more narrow nose.
PERSONALITIES: Cardigans are known to bark more, be more stubborn, and less affectionate than Pembrokes. However, Cardigans are still better family dogs than some other herding dogs like Blue Heelers/Australian Cattle Dogs.
MIX-BREEDS: Online you'll find ignorant people aka puppy mills mix-breeding Pembrokes and Cardigans. Then docking them to look like Pembrokes.
Mix-breeders also use Blue Heelers/Australian Cattle Dogs, Aussies/Australian Shepherds, and other breeds with either type of Corgi. Then docking them to look like Pembrokes too.
The mix-breeds are usually more barky, hyper, and aggressive than either purebred Pembroke or Cardigan. Mix-breeds should never be called Corgis, because they aren't purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis or Cardigan Welsh Corgis.
Pembrokes and Cardigans have centuries of history. Each breed and their history should be preserved and protected from mix-breeders.
