April is Heartworm Awareness Month!

Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes, which can survive at temperatures as low as 32°F. In North Carolina, where temps fluctuate, mosquitoes can be active for much of the year making year-round prevention essential!

🔬 Heartworm Facts:
✅ It only takes one mosquito bite to infect a pet.
✅ Heartworms can grow up to 12 inches long and live for 5-7 years in dogs.
✅ Cats can get heartworms too, even though they aren’t natural hosts!
✅ Prevention is far safer and cheaper than treatment.

🛑 Heartworm Life Cycle:
1️⃣ A mosquito bites an infected animal and picks up baby heartworms (microfilaria).
2️⃣ The microfilaria develop into larvae inside the mosquito.
3️⃣ The mosquito bites your pet, transmitting the larvae.
4️⃣ The larvae mature into adult heartworms in the heart and lungs, causing serious health issues.

🐶🐱 Keep Those Smiles Healthy! 🦷✨

Just because February’s Pet Dental Health Month is over doesn’t mean your pet’s teeth should be forgotten! Dental cleanings and proper oral care are essential year-round for your pet’s overall health.

Did you know that dental disease can lead to serious health issues like heart, liver, and kidney problems? Regular dental maintenance and cleaning help prevent painful infections, bad breath, and costly procedures down the road.

We perform a dental exam during wellness visits and can discuss the best options for keeping your pets teeth and gums healthy. Ask us about at-home dental care to keep your pets smile shining bright! 😁🐾

Bumping this post as Gabapentin will need to be filled at a Pharmacy by March 1st. We can still fill small quantities for fear free visits. Please check in with our hospital for more information!

We would like to inform you that effective March 1st, 2025, Gabapentin will be classified as a controlled substance. As a result, pets who are currently prescribed Gabapentin will require a written prescription in order to have their medication filled at a pharmacy.

If your pet is regularly taking Gabapentin, please check the medications you have on hand and contact us to arrange for the necessary written prescription as they take 24-48hrs to complete.

Should you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to our office. We are here to help!
