SPRING is starting a little late in some parts of the country, but that gives you more time to plan your garden with the bees in mind! PLANT THESE TO HELP SAVE THE BEES: 21 BEE-FRIENDLY PLANTS - illustrated by Hannah Rosengren. Be sure to go with plants native to your geography. Do you have more bee-friendly plant suggestions?

Make sure you're not unknowingly buying bee-killing plants pre-treated with neonicotinoid insecticides from stores like Walmart and Home Depot. That's right, these stores, and others, are selling plants pre-treated with neonics that are killing our pollinating friends. Home Depot has required their suppliers to label plants pre-treated with neonics - but Home Depot should really be banning these plants from their shelves. Ask your favorite nursery or gardening retailer to phase out the use of neonics on plants and to stop selling these pesticides. Your voice makes a difference!

The lavender faery has graced me with several bundles (aka thanks, Mom & her friend with the flourishing lavender bush), which I've lovingly turned into Lavender Shea Butter Soap. It was really satisfying to hand-pluck each lil bit from the stems & the soap is so much more aromatic from a fresh harvest! A few are taken by my friend who special requests lavender soap but I made a whole batch so message me if you fancy some.

In response to a massive bumblebee die-off blamed on pesticides, the Oregon Department of Agriculture issued a temporary restriction Thursday on 18 insecticides with the active ingredient dinotefuran.

An estimated 50,000 bees and other insects died in a Wilsonville shopping center parking lot last week. A landscaper sprayed 55 flowering European linden trees with Safari pesticide on June 15. State officials confirmed the dinotefuran insecticide was responsible for the deaths. Hundreds of dead bees in Hillsboro are also being investigated.

"We're not trying to get it off the shelves, or trying to tell people to dispose of it, we're just telling people not to use it," said Bruce Pokarney, a spokesperson for the department of agriculture.

While Pokarney acknowledged it would be difficult to cite individual homeowners, he said licensed pesticide applicators would be violating Oregon regulations if they use dinotefuran-based insecticides on plants in the next 180 days.

Ooh La La Curiosity Market

The good news is tomorrow you'll find Lady Bee's Body Goods in Pritchard Park at the Ooh La La Curiosity Market. The sad news is the local honey source has run dry for the moment :( Joy of the French Broad Food Co-op tells me local beekeepers are saying their hives died or swarmed and everyone is running low. My latest batch of Sunlit Kissing Balm & Sugared Body Polish was crafted this time using pure, raw, organic Orange Blossom honey from the U.S., but not Asheville. I just wanted to be transparent as my labels are printed in advance and still say "local honey". I have a source I can look into for the next batch but everyone please send a little

though i am not a doctor and can't personally vouch for all these remedies, i do have experience with many of them being effective and would encourage researching any that may seem applicable for you. elderberry syrup is amazing for cold and flu and so easy to make. i get dried elderberries from the French Broad Food Co-op, reconstitute them in just enough hot water to cover them, then cook them on low with local honey until they soften. u can eat it by the spoonful or add to yogurt.
