Happy almost 4th of July! As we move into the holiday weekend, be sure to check that the snacks your furry friends are getting are safe!
It's up to us as pet owners to keep our pets away from potentially toxic foods, no matter how hard they beg with the puppy eyes.
Check out this post from Pumpkin Pet Insurance for guidance on pet safe snacks!

Nail trims are an important part of maintaining your pets health and wellness, but can be a major cause of stress for many pets. In today's Fun Fact Friday post, we are going to talk about why we need to cut the nails, how to do them at home, and ways to lower anxiety around nail trims.
Overgrown nails can contribute to mobility trouble. If an animal has nails that are too long, they can be painful to walk on. Additionally, if the nail eventually grows into the paw pad, it can lead to infections. Longer nails also pose a risk of being torn and requiring sedation to repair.
These are all things that we can take steps to prevent by regularly getting your pets nails cut, either at home, the groomer, or here at Asheville Veterinary Associates.
Nail trims are something that can be done at home, with the right tools and knowledge. All you really need is a pair of nail clippers, small or large depending on your pet. If you are worried about hitting the quick, (the blood vessel located inside the nail), you can keep a small container of Kwik-Stop on hand to stop any bleeding that may occur. In order to avoid the quick, you can take small amounts off at a time, and cut at an angle instead of straight across. In pets with white and clear nails, you can see the quick to avoid cutting too short. In animals with dark nails, check after you cut. When you see a chalky white ring, you are close to the quick and can move on to the next nail.
We often see anxiety surrounding nail trims, and we want to help make the experience as low-stress as possible! A few helpful tools are licky mats (silicone textured mats that your pet can lick treats and cheese from as a distraction), a dremel or grinder if your pet is more stressed by the cutting action, and medication. If your pet experiences extreme situational anxiety, talk to your vet about premedication to lower their stress and make things go as smoothly as possible.
Nail trims don’t have to be a source of stress, we want to help

June marks Adopt a Cat Month! 🐱
Each year, there are approximately 3.4 million cats in shelters that need a loving home. We encourage you to reach out to local animal shelters and inquire about adoption or other ways you can help cats in need.
We also want to use this month to highlight Sister Kitten Rescue! Pictured are a few friends we have been lucky enough to meet at the hospital!
If you adopted your feline friend, comment your story on our page!
