The Farm Service Agency has a new funding opportunity to help producers expand into new markets and offset rising costs of production: the Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crop (MASC) Program. Through MASC, growers who face increased expenses from storing specialty crops, packaging, and transporting to market can apply for assistance.

Payments are determined by the total annual, or expected, specialty crop sales up to a maximum of $125,000.

MASC covers the following commercially marketed specialty crops:

Fruits (fresh, dried);
Vegetables (including dry edible beans and peas, mushrooms, and vegetable seed);
Tree nuts;
Nursery crops, Christmas trees, and floriculture;
Culinary and medicinal herbs and spices; and
Honey, hops, maple sap, tea, turfgrass, and grass seed.
The deadline for submission is January 8th, 2025. To apply, fill out the application form and contact the Buncombe County FSA office at:

North Carolina farmers whose tools or equipment were damaged by Tropical Storm Helene may be eligible for disaster assistance. FEMA aid is available to replace disaster-damaged essential tools, supplies, equipment, and items required for your job or self-employment. The deadline to apply is January 7, 2025.

Coverage For Tools and Equipment

Small farms need a variety of equipment to conduct business. These include tractors, plows, seeders or planters, harvesters, sprayers, balers, and utility vehicles. Other covered tools may consist of:

Hand and power tools
Compact tractors
Small seeders and plows
Pull-behind or backpack sprayers
Computers
These items are all potentially eligible for FEMA disaster assistance if you can show the following:

Items were damaged by the disaster.

You do not have another working item that can meet this need.

The loss of the item was not covered by insurance.

Crops and livestock are not “tools and equipment” because they are the products of a farming operation, whereas tools and equipment are the means of production.

Disaster-damaged tools, supplies, equipment, and items required by an employer as a condition of employment or required for education may be eligible for assistance. This includes personal property necessary for a specific trade or profession not provided or supplied by an employer.

There are several ways to apply: online at DisasterAssistance.gov, or use the FEMA App for mobile devices. You can also call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. For full details, visit: https://www.fema.gov/fact-sheet/essential-tools-farmers

In a Presidentially declared disaster area FEMA may provide money to repair or replace disaster-damaged tools required for self-employment or required by an employer but not provided by the employer. This assistance is available to farm workers and self-employed farmers.
