Part of fun in the sun for your family may include visits to the dog park. Time at the dog park can often be a fun way to let out some energy and socialize your pet; however, there are always some risks involved. Before your next trip to the dog park, make sure your pet and you are prepared for a safe, fun time:
๐Ÿพ Make sure your pet is up-to-date on their vaccinations. This may or may not be a requirement at the dog park you go to; however, making sure your pet is protected is key in keeping them safe and trying to avoid a sick visit after a dog park outing.
๐Ÿพ Know your dogโ€™s body language, cues, and temperament. When youโ€™re at the dog park, make sure to have eyes on your pet at all times to ensure they are interacting in a safe manner.
๐Ÿพ Know your dogโ€™s limitsโ€ฆ This goes for their temperament as well as their energy level. An overtired dog can become an irritated dog along with health concerns if your dog gets very exhausted.
๐Ÿพ Read and obey the rules of the dog park. Many dog parks have separate spaces for certain weight ranges of dogs.
๐Ÿพ Avoid bringing toys as this can be a source of tension and aggression in either your dogs or other dogs at the park.
๐Ÿพ Get your pet comfortable, confident, and consistent on their basic commands. You never know when you may need to call your pet away from a situation. Having confidence in your petโ€™s recall can be extremely helpful in stressful situations.

During the heat this week, make sure to keep your furry family members in mind!
โ˜€ The pavement can burn your pet's paws! Do a temperature check before having your pet go for a walk.
โ˜€ Overheating is a real danger for your pets. Know the signs and how to prevent overheating.
โ˜€ The temperature outside of the can is not reflective of the interior temperature. Never leave your pet alone in the car!
โ˜€ Dehydration is also a higher risk. Make sure you provide your pet with cool, clean drinking water.

As the weather heats up, make sure you are aware of how hot the ground is for your pet. โ€œOne of the reasons that many pets can suffer in the summer is that their delicate feet become burned by hot surfaces while they are on walks or other outings with their owners,โ€ (VEG). While asphalt is the most common to heat up and burn your petโ€™s paws, other surfaces likes sand and even sidewalks can also burn their paws if the temperature is hot enough. Doing a temperature test with your own bare hand or foot is the best way to see if it is going to be too hot for your pet; if itโ€™s too hot for you, itโ€™s too hot for your pet. There are precautions you can take to make sure your pets are safe and comfortable during these warm summer months:
โ˜€ Temperature check the ground before taking your dog on a walk
โ˜€ Consider alternative routes for your walks like grass paths
โ˜€ Leave your pet at home during very hot days and try to not bring them outside during the hottest parts of the day
โ˜€ Get protective socks or booties to protect their paws from the pavement

Happy 1st day of summer! Have fun summer plans with the entire family? Here are some tips for making sure your pets enjoy the summer safely:
โ˜€ Make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations! Unsure if they are? Call our office and our team will be happy to help!
โ˜€ Make sure your pets are taking their monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventions
โ˜€ Pets can be escape artists; so, make sure they are wearing their identification and always make sure unscreened windows and doors are closed
โ˜€ Be mindful of the temperature outside and how that can affect your pets!
๐Ÿพ Never leave them in a car unattended
๐Ÿพ When walking, do a quick pavement check. If itโ€™s too hot for your bare hand or foot, itโ€™s too hot for your pet
๐Ÿพ Always make sure your pet has the opportunity for shade and cool, fresh water when out in warm or hot temperatures
๐Ÿพ Be mindful of their fur. This goes for keeping thick coat breeds brushed and in cooler areas more frequently and for short hair breeds, they can get sunburnt. So, offer shade and even pet friendly sunscreen or sun shield outfits when outdoors for a long period of time
๐Ÿพ Take note of when the hottest parts of the day are and try to avoid taking your pet out during these times

Heading to the lake this summer and bringing your pup? Before you head out, keep in mind these important safety tips:
โ˜€ Not all pets are strong swimmers! ALWAYS monitor your pet when they are in or near water. Wearing a lifejacket is the safest way for your pet to experience the water
โ˜€ Avoid areas with fishing gear, algae, & dead fish
โ˜€ If the water looks or smells questionable, it is best to avoid that area
โ˜€ Rinse your pet off with clean water after they have been in the lake water
โ˜€ Monitor your dog and make sure they avoid eating sand and drinking the lake water. Both can cause GI upset & dehydration but sand can get even become impacted in your petโ€™s stomach causing an emergency

Itโ€™s that time of year when we are spending more time outside and so are our pets. While hanging out at home in the yard, you may want to get the hose out to give your pet some water or even spray them down to keep them cool but before you do, do a temperature check!! Water can get trapped in the hose after you turn it off and can sit in the hose in the sun. When the water is first turned on, it could be the leftover water which can be Extremely hot. As a precaution, spray the hose away from your pet for a few seconds and do a temperature check with your hand before offering it to your pet or hosing them down.

As temperatures rise, so does the risk for overheating and even heat strokes in our pets. There are different ways to prevent overheating and heat stroke in your pet:
โ˜€ When outside, always make sure they have access to shade and clean, cool drinking water
โ˜€ Donโ€™t over exercise on hot days or in peak heat times of the day
โ˜€ Give extra attention to how brachycephalic or short-muzzle breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, & Pekinese, are handling the heat. Brachycephalic breeds often have pre-disposing respiratory issues that make it more challenging for them to pant and breathe. This same rule applies for elderly and obese pets.
โ˜€ Never leave your dog alone in a parked car. Heat builds quickly and can reach deadly levels even on days that are not very hot

Heading out to the sand and sea and bringing your furry family members along? While packing up, make sure to pack a few extra things for your pet to make sure they are safe and comfortable at the beach.
โ˜€ Lifejacket
โ˜€ Travel size water bowl
โ˜€ Pet first aid kit
โ˜€ Pet safe sunscreen or a sunsuit
โ˜€ Dog booties or socks for the hot pavement and sand
There are also a few safety tips to keep in mind when bringing your pet to the beach with you:
๐ŸŒŠ Keep your pet cool! Your pet can overheat and even have heat stroke if not kept at a cool enough temperature. To help prevent this, keep your pet in a shaded area and make sure they have access to fresh, cool drinking water
๐ŸŒŠ Providing them with cool, fresh water consistently can help prevent them from drinking the salt water and eating the sand
๐ŸŒŠ Salt water, when ingested in small amounts can lead to GI issues like diarrhea. However, in large quantities, can be quite dangerous and lead to dehydration and other serious health concerns
๐ŸŒŠ Keep an eye out for other animals that are on the beach like crabs, jellyfish, and stingrays
๐ŸŒŠ Keep an eye on the water conditions! If you are taking your pet in the water with you, make sure they have their life vest on and that they feel confident in the water

Did you know that our pets can get sunburnt too?! The most common areas that pets get sunburnt are their nose, ear tips, and around their lips. They can also be sun sensitive around their groin, inside their legs, and on their abdomen. โ€œPets with light skin and a short or thin hair coat are particularly prone to sunburn, skin cancer, and other solar-induced skin diseasesโ€... โ€œIf your dogโ€™s coat is shaved during the summer for cooling, sunscreen may also be helpful,โ€ (Veterinary Partner).
The best way to prevent sunburn and overheating is to avoid the sun between 10am and 3pm; however, if that is not possible, a pet safe sunscreen is a great option. When picking a sunscreen for your pet, make sure it is fragrance-free, non-staining, and contains UVA & UVB barriers equivalent to SPF 15-30 for humans (Veterinary Partner). Also, make sure to, โ€œavoid human sunscreens that have ingestion warnings because these products contain ingredients that can be toxic if licked by a dog or cat.โ€ Their are also UV blocking clothes and hats that can be helpful for pets that are often in the sun (Zoetis).
Some common symptoms of sunburn in dogs are:
โ˜€ Skin is turning pink or red
โ˜€ Skin is becoming dry and flaky
โ˜€ Skin is blistering
โ˜€ Your pet is developing a fever

Spending more time outside or even time out by the pool now? Here are some pool safety tips for your pet:
โ˜€ Never leave your pet unattended beside or in the pool
๐Ÿพ Provide them with fresh, cold drinking water to avoid them drinking the pool water
โ˜€ Introduce them to the water gradually
๐Ÿพ Make sure your dogs have a safe exit from the pool
โ˜€ Not all dogs are strong swimmers. Monitor their abilities and make sure they are not struggling to swim. Pet specific life vests are a great safety measure to ensure your pet is safe while splashing around
๐Ÿพ Rinse them off thoroughly after swimming to get the chlorine out of their fur and off their skin. This includes cleaning and drying their ears after their swim! Dogs can be more prone to ear infections after being in water.
โ˜€ Make sure all pool chemicals are stored in a chew-proof container away from your petsโ€™ reach
