New Year’s Eve Pet Safety Tips – Celebrate Safely!

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in the New Year, let’s make sure our pets are safe and comfortable during the festivities. New Year’s Eve can be stressful for our pets, so here are a few tips to keep them happy while you celebrate:

🎆 Loud fireworks can be scary for pets. Keep them indoors in a safe, quiet space. Close windows, draw curtains, and consider playing soft music or white noise to help calm them.

🍹 Many party snacks and drinks are toxic to pets, including alcohol, chocolate, and anything containing grapes or raisins. Make sure guests know not to feed your pets!

🎉 Confetti, balloons, and party poppers can look like toys but may pose choking or ingestion hazards. Keep these out of reach.

🐕 If your pet gets anxious or tries to escape, ensure they’re wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags. Microchips are an added layer of security.

✨ Panting, pacing, hiding, or excessive barking could indicate your pet is feeling overwhelmed. Provide comfort and reassurance, and don’t hesitate to reach out if they need extra care.

Remember, emergencies don’t take holidays, and neither do we! Our team is here for you from 8AM - 10PM on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If your pet needs care, you can count on us to help. Wishing you and your pets a happy, healthy, and safe start to 2025! 🎇🐾

As the year comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the incredible resilience shown by our community. Thank you to our SAVES family, volunteers, and supporters for stepping up when it mattered most. You turned challenges into opportunities to serve, heal, and rebuild. ❤️

From disaster relief efforts to outreach programs, these moments remind us of the difference we can make when we come together. Through devastation, we witnessed the power of unity. Together, we provided care, support, and hope for those impacted—both two- and four-legged. 🐾

As we look to the future, you can help us continue this mission by donating to Hilda’s Heroes. Your support ensures we can provide resources for our outreach and volunteer efforts in times of need. 💛

Traveling with your pet this holiday season? Keep your furry companion safe and comfortable with these tips:

🚗 Secure your pet with a harness, carrier, or crate to prevent distractions while driving. Never let your pet sit on your lap while driving!

✈️ If traveling by plane, use an airline-approved carrier and make sure it’s well-ventilated. Label the carrier with your pet’s name, your contact info, and travel details. Ensure your pet’s vaccines and health certificates are up to date if traveling out of state or country.

💊 If your pet gets anxious or motion sick, consult your vet for advice or medications.

🎒 Bring food, water, medications, a leash, waste bags, and a familiar blanket or toy to keep your pet calm.

Remember, traveling can be stressful for pets. If your pet shows any signs of distress or becomes unwell during your trip, South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty is OPEN 8AM-10PM daily to help!

Safe travels and happy holidays from our team!

As you may consider decorating your home this holiday season, we wanted to share a friendly reminder that several popular festive plants may be toxic to pets.

Please keep potential harmful plants out of paw's reach. A few of the most common toxic holiday plants include:

- Poinsettia
- Amaryllis
- Mistletoe
- Balsam
- Pine
- Cedar
- Holly

If you suspect your pet may have ingested a harmful plant, contact South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty at (910) 790-1070 right away. You can also connect with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.

🌟⚠HOLIDAY HAZARDS⚠🌟

They might look beautiful, but holiday decorations may be hazardous for pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe this holiday season:

🎄 Securely anchor and keep pets away from the tree. Also remember to sweep up any fallen brush or pine needles.

💡 Hang strands of lights higher up. Not only can pets get tangled in strings, but these strands can give them a potentially life-threatening electrical shock if they bite through the wire.

🐈 Tinsel and ornaments can seem like toys (especially to cats) and can cause serious stomach issues if ingested. Avoid using tinsel when possible and stick with larger, shatterproof ornaments that aren’t easy to break or swallow.

Hosting holiday gatherings can be exciting, but they come with some risks for your pets. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your celebrations are safe for everyone:

🍗 Keep human food out of reach, and remind guests not to share scraps.

🎁 Ribbons, bows, and small decorations might look like toys but can pose choking or ingestion risks. Clean up quickly after unwrapping gifts.

🚪 With guests coming and going, pets can slip out unnoticed. Make sure your pet has a collar with ID tags and keep an eye on doors.

✨ Provide a quiet area where your pet can relax away from the noise and excitement of the party.

If your pet shows signs of distress or eats something they shouldn’t, our team is available every day from 8AM-10PM to help. Give us a call at (828) 210-8285. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

🦃 Thanksgiving Day: We’re Open 8AM-10PM! 🦃

This Thanksgiving, our dedicated team will be here to ensure your pets are safe and cared for in case of an emergency.

If your pet shows signs of distress—such as vomiting, lethargy, or unusual behavior—don’t hesitate to bring them in. We’re here to help every step of the way.

Wishing you a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

🚫 Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets This Thanksgiving 🚫

If you are preparing a Thanksgiving meal, remember that certain foods are harmful to pets. Avoid giving them:

🍫 Chocolate (even a small amount can be toxic)
🍇 Grapes and raisins (can lead to kidney failure)
🍞 Uncooked yeast dough (can expand in their stomach)
🦴 Turkey bones (can cause choking or GI blockages)

Even a small “treat” can lead to serious health issues. For any concerns, call SAVES at (828) 210-8285—we’re open from 8am-10pm to ensure your pet stays safe this holiday.

🐾 Help Us Save Asheville's Pets! 🐾

At SAVES, we've been honored to provide life-saving care to many pets in need, especially in the wake of Hurricane Helene. But today, we’re reaching out to our community—we need your help to keep going.

Our donation fund is running low, and to continue providing essential emergency treatment for Asheville’s pets, we urgently need financial support.

By donating to Hilda’s Heroes Fund, you can make a direct impact on a pet’s life, helping families who might otherwise be unable to afford the care their beloved pets need. Every dollar counts, every contribution matters.

Together, we can ensure that no pet is turned away in their time of need.

💙 Donate Now to help us continue saving lives. Thank you for being a hero for Asheville’s pets!
