A disease like Parvovirus in dogs is highly contagious and can have deadly consequences. Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

๐Ÿฉ Parvovirus attacks the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system
๐Ÿ’ฉ The main way that dogs contract Parvovirus is through the f***s (stool) of infected dogs
๐Ÿถ Parvovirus can affect puppies too young to be vaccinated, puppies within their vaccination course, and unvaccinated adult dogs
๐Ÿ•โ€ Vaccinating your pet is the only way to protect them from the disease

Some of the signs of parvovirus include lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, fever or low body temperature (hypothermia), vomiting, and severe (often bloody) diarrhea. Persistent vomiting and diarrhea can cause rapid dehydration, and damage to the intestines and immune system can cause septic shock.

If your dog exhibits symptoms of parvovirus, take them to your nearest veterinarian to be tested immediately. Call SAVES at (828) 210-8285. We are open Monday - Saturday 8:00 am - 8:00 pm. The quicker they can be treated, the better the chance of recovery.

June is a 2-year-old Labradoodle who initially came to SAVES back in March of 2023 for progressive tremors following a possible toxin ingestion. Initially, June was admitted through our Critical Care Department and treated supportively. After a day in the hospital, June's condition continued to progress, and she was no longer able to walk or stand. Our neurologist, Dr. Sohaila Arizmendi quickly evaluated June and recommended performing an MRI and a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tap since June was exhibiting neurological symptoms consistent with a balance problem. After all her tests came back, June was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology which means June has meningitis that was affecting primarily her balance center. After several long days of treatment, June started responding and eventually went home walking! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Since then, June has been on a regimen of steroids and chemotherapy to help decrease the inflammation on her brain. June has been doing exceptionally well and recently celebrated her 2nd birthday! Her owners are very grateful for everything the SAVES Neurology Department has done for June and shared this recent photo with us.

Happy birthday June from the entire SAVES team. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‚

November is . According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), 50% of dogs over age 10, and 25% of all dogs will develop cancer. Although there is less information for cats, our feline friends also commonly develop cancer.

Should you discover your pet has cancer, we understand how difficult and scary it can be. However, itโ€™s important to know that treatment options are available and they can improve the quality and length of life, and in some cases, even offer a cure. ๐Ÿ™Œ

If you have any questions about your petโ€™s health, speak with your petโ€™s veterinarian to discuss any concerns. You can learn more about our dedicated oncology department here: https://www.southashevillevets.com/services/oncology

October 10th is World Mental Health Day, raising public awareness of mental health issues around the globe through education and advocacy. ๐Ÿง ๐ŸŒŽ

Far from being all puppies and kittens, veterinarians face long hours, staffing shortages, financial pressures, and other challenges associated with providing medical care to so many pets in need, all of which take a mental toll.

Let's remember to show kindness and patience towards your veterinarian and hospital staff the next time you visit.โค๏ธ
