First tomato and pea plants of the year! These are all tiny varieties that I’ll grow fully indoors to get us a jump start on harvesting. Larger varieties are still tucked away in their seed packs. We’ve got Tom Thumb peas and for the tomatoes: Tiny Tim, Orange Hat, Micro Tom, and Tomato Tumbler.

Savoring these final evenings milking by lantern. Rose was bred several times last fall and finally settled in November. That means babies are expected around April 10th! It also means we need to give her body a break from producing milk for us so she can focus on growing those kids. It’s been such a treat having milk through these winter months.

Snow day means soap day! This is a goat milk salt bar with pink kaolin clay and manjistha root powder. I love how the salt crystals look like snow flakes.

Pepper harvest time! I planted around 15 varieties of sweet peppers this year and tried growing them in multiple locations to see where they’d thrive. Our driveway garden in grow bags was by far the most successful. These plants grew to 5’ tall and are still loaded with peppers after several harvests. This area only gets 5-6 hours of full sun as it’s in the shade starting around 1pm. But the combination of asphalt heat and morning sun + grow bags with saucers to keep water and nutrients from draining out seems to be a winning combination. The most successful variety by far was Ancient Sweets. Large, beautiful, red, and sweet. Plus a great shape for stuffing, dipping, roasting, or chopping. Highly recommended.

After taking several years off, we are excited to begin again with our new herd!
