Animal Control provides for the safety and welfare of the residents. Animal Control enforces state laws and county ordinances as they apply to domestic animals. The department operates a shelter for the specialized care of animals in their custody. The shelter provides veterinarian care for homeless or unwanted animals until they are adopted or placed with an animal rescue organization. This facility does not euthanize healthy, adoptable animals.

🔔Please Read🔔

Dear Valued Community Members,

While we understand life happens and we do pride ourselves in being able to assist our Community in providing resources or rehoming services (pending Behavior Analysis.)

We would be remised if we didn’t speak on our Policy and Procedures of Owner Surrenders.

On Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at approximately 6:30 AM, our Shelter Staff arrived on duty and observed this poor fur bebe in a crate by the Taylor Dog Park bridge.

This precious guy, whom we have affectionately dubbed "Hammer", had been rained on from the night prior, peed in his crate, miserable, and ABSOLUTELY terrified!

(Who wouldn't be in this situation?!)

He displayed severe signs of Fear Aggression- one small mistake, failure or misjudgment would have landed both himself and our beloved Kennel Attendants in a very serious situation.

To put it simply- Our Staff could have been mauled OR this guy could have ran into traffic and been gravely injured by a vehicle.

Again, we want to reiterate that we will do everything in our power to assist our Community, HOWEVER there are Policies and Procedures for a reason.

This is the SECOND time an animal has been left outside our building.

Please, we will not judge you, we want what is best for everyone involved in the safest possible way.

Hammer (ID # 589978) is currently Available for Adoption and will need a special and patient person and training in order to delve deeper into his Fear Aggression.

For now he is safely with us, but his transition could have been much easier and less traumatic.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated in today’s Day of Service in honor and remembrance of 9/11.

A great deal of these Shelters Pets had their first ever walks since their stray hold period and without your help they wouldnt have had such a beautiful day and memory of their first walks as an official Adoptable Hanover County Pup.

Even our kitties and piggies got shown some love as well!

Dear Valued Community Members, While we understand life happens and we do pride ourselves in being able to assist our Community in providing resources or rehoming services (pending Behavior Analysis.) We would be remised if we didn’t speak on our Policy and Procedures of Owner Surrenders. On Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at approximately 6:30 AM, our Shelter Staff arrived on duty and observed this poor fur bebe in a crate by the Taylor Dog Park bridge. This precious guy, whom we have affectionately dubbed “Hammer”, had been rained on from the night prior, peed in his crate, miserable, and ABSOLUTELY terrified! (Who wouldn’t be in this situation?!) He displayed severe signs of Fear Aggression- one small mistake, failure or misjudgment would have landed both himself and our beloved Kennel Attendants in a very serious situation. To put it simply- Our Staff could have been mauled OR this guy could have ran into traffic and been gravely injured by a vehicle. Again, we want to reiterate that we will do everything in our power to assist our Community, HOWEVER there are Policies and Procedures for a reason. This is the SECOND time an animal has been left outside our building. Please, we will not judge you, we want what is best for everyone involved and the safest possible way. If things are in dire straits and you need immediate assistance, Please contact 804 365 6485 during normal operating hours, or 804 365 6140 to be put in contact with an Animal Control Professional for guidance on proper Owner Surrender Procedures. Hammer (ID# 589978) is currently Available for Adoption and will need a special and patient person and training in order to delve deeper into his Fear Aggression. For now he is safely with us, but his transition could have been much easier and less traumatic.
