Our Story

We have a true passion for starting young horses right! After 30 years of riding, training and selling adult horses, we found that so many of them came to us with huge training holes! Many times, young horses are simply turned out to pasture for 2 to 3 years and then we wonder why, when training begins, there are so many behavioral problems and issues. Our mission, is to SLOWLY start weanlings and yearlings (ages 6 - 12 months) properly, to prepare them for a future career in any discipline. THERE IS NO PHYSICAL CONDITIONING in our Young Horse Training Program. We develop mental and emotional behavior (along with some pretty cool other skills too), so that when full-time under saddle training does begin, it’s so easy and natural, that the horse doesn’t even think twice about it. There no ‘breaking’ required. When under saddle training does begin, it’s just a natural progression and the horse is completely accepting of just one more thing to get desensitized to. At Equine Proper Beginnings, our youngsters are allowed to be young, silly, and goofy, but we reward and encourage exploration and curiosity. On top of that, they learn life skills, emotional control, body cues and so much more. Because of this, they develop into an amazing, brave, bold, educated, engaged young partners.
