Keep your dog out of the ponds and lakes to keep them safe!
The NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued a warning regarding potential source of toxins in dogs caused by Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB). HAB is caused by a bacteria called cyanobacteria which is harmful to the liver and central nervous system. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation routinely samples bodies of water. HABs with high toxins have been identified in Prospect Park Lake and Central Park Lake.
o Additional HABs have been reported from Morningside Pond, Kissena Lake, Harlem Meer, Golden Lake, Turtle Pond, Indian Pond, Bowne Pond and Clove Lake

PREVENTION:
• Keep dogs on a leash near shoreline to keep them from wading, swimming or drinking the water.
If a dog goes in the water, remove it immediately and do not allow the dog to lick its fur or paws.
Rinse/wash it thoroughly with soap and fresh water using rubber gloves. Otherwise a towel or rag can be used to remove algal debris.
The dog owner should wash his or her hands with fresh water.
The dog owner should look closely for any symptoms in their pet.

Dog Flu is highly contagious disease began as an isolated episode of respiratory disease in one state, and has now become a nationwide health concern for all dogs. In Brooklyn there has been 14 diagnosed cases in May.

Dogs have no natural immunity to Dog Flu because it is a newer virus.
This virus is easily spread. Many dogs are boarded, go to daycare, or visit grooming facilities where close contact to other dogs puts them at high risk.
Dog Flu Spreads Easier When They're Social

Direct contact: when dogs kiss, lick or nuzzle each other
Through the air: from a cough or sneeze
Contaminated objects: doggie bowls, toys, doorknobs or clothing
Human touch: hands of pet owners, veterinary clinic staff or shelter workers

If you would like your dog to be vaccinated for Canine Influenza to help protect your dog, please give us a call.
