This cat died of flea bite anaemia. Fleas drink blood and with this many fleas the cat did not have enough blood to live. She was an indoor only cat.

When we suggest parasite control medication this is what we are trying to avoid. Parasite control is not a game it is a serious medication that prevents very serious disease and death.

USDA GRANTS SANTA A TRAVEL PERMIT

Permit allows reindeer to enter and exit the United States between the hours of 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2023, and 6 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2023.

THIS JUST IN: USDA Issues Permit for Santa’s Reindeer to Enter the U.S.

(Washington, D.C., December 21, 2023) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today issued a transit permit to Mr. S. Nicholas Claus of the North Pole, a distributor with Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc. The permit will allow reindeer to enter and exit the United States between the hours of 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2023, and 6 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2023, local time, through or over any U.S. border port.

"USDA is delighted to grant Mr. Claus and his reindeer a special permit to enter the United States, ensuring a seamless journey for the joy they bring each holiday season," said Jenny Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs. "We extend a warm welcome to Mr. Claus and recognize the vital role of U.S. milk and cookies in fueling his festive flight."

Veterinary officials ensured the reindeer met all entry requirements before issuing the permit. Dr. Rosemary Sifford, USDA’s Chief Veterinary Officer, stated: “At a recent inspection, the reindeer were found to be healthy and able to prance and paw with each hoof.”

It was noted on the health certificate that one reindeer, Rudolph, has a minor physical anomaly. However, APHIS indicated that Rudolph’s red nose, while bright, was normal for him and not a concern.

APHIS regulates the movement of cervids, including reindeer, to protect the health of America’s livestock population. The permitting process provides assurance that only healthy animals enter the United States.

USDA has confirmed that the reindeer will arrive pulling a wooden sleigh with jingling bells attached, filled with brightly wrapped gifts. Port personnel will clean and disinfect the runners and underside of the sleigh at the time of entry. They will also conduct a short visual inspection of the reindeer. Mr. Claus has been asked to disinfect his boots and thoroughly wash his hands. These measures are intended to prevent the entry of any livestock diseases the team may encounter during deliveries to farms and houses around the world prior to entering the United States.

Mr. Claus also provided an advance list of what port personnel should expect upon their arrival. This includes a variety of food items, all of which come from approved locations and none of which pose a threat to U.S. animal or plant health.

“It’s important that Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc. take all the right steps and precautions to protect against the potential introduction of pests and diseases,” explained Mr. Claus. “I appreciate USDA’s assistance every year as we gear up for our big night.”

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Noche Buena, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or other holidays during this time of year, USDA wishes you a happy and healthy season full of time-honored traditions and celebrations.

Hi everybody
I don’t post often and today I’m in a quandary. Here is the deal:

We have long been open on Saturday’s for the convenience of clients and benefit of animals. However this is the third Saturday in a row that the 9am and the 9:20am apt has not bothered to turn up as scheduled and confirmed.

I am not willing to continue providing Saturday hours if this continues.

So, from now on all Saturday apts will require a deposit. I have got to have people turn up for appointments and this is the only way it seems I can make it happen.

We have many animals that we have to turn away because those slots are filled and when people don’t bother to come it benefits no one.

Yes I’m frustrated, very frustrated. Scheduled appointments are not optional.
I don’t love deposits but if it takes skin in the game for clients to turn up then I will have to do it.

🎆🎆Animals and the 4th of July 🎆🎆

It is a crazy notion that we, in America, continue to have fireworks in fire season with escalating effects of climate change but nonetheless we do, and animals hate it. Dogs and cats are both terrified by the loud noises and the bright flashing lights which create congestion and commotion which compounds the fright. Dogs and cats try to escape and run from their owners and often are never found. However, there are a few things owners can do to help alleviate the situation and help keep your pets safe and at home.

First (and foremost): do not have fireworks at home or keep them to a minimum.

Second, do not assume your animals "will be ok" or "are fine with fireworks". It is far better to assume that they hate fireworks and will be frightened by them and adjust your home fireworks accordingly: shortening the time frame of the home firework display or adjusting the type of firework is on display.

Third, make sure all animals have current identification on them . Identification is a collar complete with animal name and phone number AND the collar is always ON the pet during fireworks season. Microchips are also useful but are a great "plan B" with collars and tags being PLAN A. The microchip must have been registered with the corresponding database to be of any use.

Fourth, owners must make sure that cats are kept inside during fireworks season as even cats that have never disappeared in the past can certainly disappear in the present. Having a safe and quiet place for the animal to be confined that is NOT NEAR the fireworks display can help ease the frightful situation for your pet.

Fifth, sedation can be used to calm the pet and reduce fear. It is certainly a helpful tool, but it is not super effective if the pet is subjected to loud and bright explosions. There are many medications that can be used for sedation and/or anti-anxious medications. These medications are not to be taken lightly and are to be prescribed for a SPECIFIC pet by a veterinarian. It is best to give the medications to your pet only as prescribed as there are often significant side effects including the desired sedation.

Note: it is unwise to leave a sedated animal by itself!

All in all, fireworks and the associated noise and bright lights should not be assumed to be safe for animals. Astoria Animal Hospital recommends that all owners have a plan in place for their pets during this time for their safety and comfort. Please talk to us, or to your chosen vet, about what you can do to minimize trauma, fright, and pet loss during this national holiday that is celebrated in a nonsensical manner.

Hi all
I will be out next week doing required CE. I’m sorry if this is an inconvenience but I’m sure Jen, crystal, Madelyn, zena, and Stephanie will do their best to help if it is needed.

Today I honed my eye surgery skills. Though I already knew most I did learn a couple new things! The class was early early early but very good reassuring!

I’m trying to have a little fun as well while I’m in Las Vegas. I’m happy to have tips on what evening entertainment I should seek!

See you all soon

Hi everyone! We still have some $100 mail-in rebates for purchasing a full year's supply of Credelio and Interceptor Plus together. Products must be purchased by 12/31/2022 to be able to submit the rebate form. If your pet is current on their exam you may qualify to purchase a full year's supply and take advantage of our rebates. If your pet is due for an exam we do have openings this week and next! While we do normally get these rebate forms from the manufacturer, they've never offered so high as $100 (usually around $50-$75), and it is unlikely they will offer that again next year. Don't let this spectacular deal pass you by, give us a call so we can hook you up!

🦃HAPPY THANKSGIVING!🍗

For us this holiday is a time to gather, give thanks, and (hopefully) enjoy the company of loved ones. For our pets though it is the beginning of a season filled with temptation and dangers. Here is a quick list of Dos and Don'ts.

🦃Fatty foods (ham and other pork including bones, poultry skin and dark meat, butter, sour cream, etc) - can cause pancreatitis with vomiting and diarrhea.
🍗 Stuffing and other prepared foods – as it may contain onions or garlic which have blood thinning qualities
🦃 Turkey Bones – splinters may cause indigestion or bowel obstruction
🍗 Salads with Grapes/Raisins – can cause kidney failure
🦃 Chocolate Desserts – toxic to both cats and dogs If your pet does ingest any of these foods
🍗 Sugar Free Desserts - some sugar substitutes (erythritol and xylitol) are toxic to animals.

And, as always, for BIG dogs - NO EXERCISE at least 2 hours after any meal.

We will be open normal hours on Friday; however, some of these foods have more dangerous consequences than others, and a quick response can make all the difference for a positive outcome. If your pet ingests any of these foods, you can reach out to the Pet Poison Helpline listed on the infographic to see if your pet should be seen immediately. You can also reach out to the nearest 24 hour emergency facilities.

Hey Folks! Some good news and some bad news.

First the GOOD news: Our wonderful Dr. Weirschin has agreed to start coming in on Mondays, so we will now be seeing patients every Monday! YAY!! 🎉🤩

Now the BAD news: Temporarily, due to some staffing changes**, we will no longer be open on Saturdays. We just do not have the staffing available to be open 6 days a week, and felt that being open on Mondays would be the best way to serve the pets of our community. We are hoping this will be a very short-term change and will let you know as soon as we are able to open on Saturdays again.

Additionally, for the time being we have been faced with a tough choice regarding nail trims: continue with a very hefty price hike, or suspend them temporarily. We have chose to suspend for now, as that seems the best path forward. Please note this involves nail trim only appointments, not nail trims with an exam. If you wish to have your pet's nails trimmed during their exam, please let us know at the time of scheduling so we can ensure that we are booking enough time to do that. We may not be able to add that in if we do not have advance notice.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during our transitions.
