Tyr was nice enough to demonstrate some of the obstacles I put together today!
Captured this moment the other day when we moved Tyr to the round pen. It was a very windy day that day but he still was showing off for the fillies!
It's been raining on and off for the last several weeks and boy do we have a lot of mud to show for it. It's hard to keep the horses out of it and it's even harder to deliver hay to their respective areas. Today, the paddock that Katrin, Elena, and Agro were in was just too much and we had to get them out of there. Normally we reserve the front pasture for later spring/ early summer to give the grass a chance to grow, but today we turned these three out there so they could get a break from the mud. You can see in the video that it's still misty out, but the forecast is saying we'll get a break from the rain soon. In the meantime, enjoy these three running about!
We had someone come out with a backhoe today and dig a final resting place for Kohana. Sure beats digging it by hand. The other mares were looking on as Kohana was laid to rest. I'd like to think they were paying tribute to her. Katrin stood closest at the fence line, and I know she's going to miss her sister the most.
Pardon the mud but enjoy the chaos! These two colts (Kronos and Heimdall) are tearing it up today!
Also, these two lovely boys are still available for your consideration!
I was coming back from a walk with Darci, my dad's dog, and the black birds were making quite a ruckus behind me, which caught Justin's attention. At 31.5 years old, he's still moves nicely. Also featured in the video is Kristoff, his grandson.
Here's some video of Zephyr at liberty today!
Had to get some closeups of the mares!
All of our mares in one pasture.
It was finally dry enough out in the front pasture that we thought to give Justin dibs on being out there first. Justin, our foundation stallion for the farm, will be 31 this month, and despite having a bit of a sway back and not able to hold his weight like he used to, he's still pretty impressive to us! We hope he still has a few more years in him with us, especially my dad.
Breeding season is around the corner for us. No foals this year due to me being pregnant during last breeding season, and dad being busy last year, and we were concerned about space. We still have Heimdall, the palomino colt, available for a new home! Anyways, we are going to try something a little different this year. We are going to try pasture breeding this time and see how that goes. We've only done it once a very long time ago, and we weren't successful, so if anyone has tips for pasture breeding, I would love to hear it!
Meanwhile, enjoy this video of Justin, still doing his spring shedding. Also, pardon the major wind noise. Very windy today.
We had some four legged visitors today!
Been awhile since I last posted! So here's a bit of an update. A week or so ago, we put my plan into motion to bring all the horses up close to the barn and to set out a strategic amount of round bales so that chores would be easier on dad while I go on maternity leave soon. We still have two more bales to go but it's been working out great so far. Additionally, for one of the main water tanks that most of the horses access, dad put in a water heater so that would also be easier. We are gearing up for winter and I'm glad to see good weight on everyone going into it.
So here's a video of the boys, Heimdall (palomino) and Kronos (bay) running about before we got some snow, and you can see some of our bales set up. Pardon the muddy boys.
Here are the moms after weaning. I'm sure they'll calm down soon. Featuring May, Cheyenne, and Mira.
Thor and Zisa in their new paddock!
I don't feature the mini horses very often, but today I got a project done where I could let them out in a new grassy area while reusing the hog panels that we had used to surround the round bales during the winter. Zisa and Thor were having a ground ol' time and Elena is right next door in the round pen. At least now dad doesn't have to mow this area!
