Spin Top Kennel Located in Athens, Alabama, we are dedicated to breeding some of the finest bird dogs in the USA. My name is David Holt. We were avid rabbit-hunters.

More than 35 years ago, an old friend invited me to go with him quail hunting. I had never hunted quail with a good bird dog until then. As a boy growing up on the farm, my wonderful daddy had always owned beagles. I hunted with my brother, my precious daddy, grandpa, and my great-uncle Ilie. We would occasionally kill a quail or two while rabbit hunting, but never hunted with a bird dog. I can st

ill hear those beagles running on the hot-trail of a cotton tail...

That quail-hunting trip with my friend changed me forever. Shortly after that hunt I purchased my first birddog, a pointer puppy and I have owned bird dogs ever since. I have owned some of the best dogs I have ever hunted with and have hunted with others who had some of the best and worst. And, not all of mine have been perfect! After some health issues (yes THAT, we all have a story) I retired from teaching high school and coaching football. Now, raising an occasional litter of pups, working with my own dogs and spending time with my grandchildren has become my greatest joys. Those passions occupy much of my time. Especially time with my FAMILY!! During the past several years during hunting season my sons, grandchildren, friends (both Alabama and Auburn) coaching buddies, boys and girls from school and I hunted almost every Saturday and on many holidays. I am still in the field as much as possible although not nearly as often. About Our Kennel:

We are not in competition with anyone and we do not make negative comments about other breeders' dogs. And, we have given away several puppies and older dogs. There are NUMEROUS kennels in the Southeast that have been started from my stock. I have decided to cease from giving other breeder reccomendations. When one is in the MIDDLE of a recommended deal that goes bad….it is NOT GOOD…for ME! There are breeders that USE and post pictures of MY DOGS in order to sell their dogs. YEP…..it sure does happen!! I do not have quail to sale. I do have flight-ready training pigeons AVAILABLE and occasionally quail eggs. When I do have a litter of pups they are probably socialized as good as any pups in the country. My grandchildren love to play with the puppies. They roll them on the ground, ride them on the RTV, pile up with them in the cedar shavings and as they say, "help train them." I do not particularly favor one breed over another. I have seen and owned some outstanding, solid dogs in the English Setter breed, the German Shorthaired Pointer breed, Boykin Spaniels, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon’s, and also the Brittany Spaniel breed. We have proven crosses! I have dogs at my kennels from past breedings --MY STOCK. And, I continue to read about and I KNOW of many kennels that have started from and CONTINUE to operate with MY STOCK; my bloodlines!! And, pictures of MY DOGS!! I have recommended many callers to another or other kennels. I WILL NOT do that anymore. Being in the middle of a bad situation is no fun!!! This is Charley, he belongs to my sweet grandson Reed! He is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon ( a griff). Reed picked him and named him! Earlier Reed had picked a female.. and named her April. One day he said, “Papa, I DON’T want April, I want a BOY-DOG!” I told him we will get you a boy from the next litter. His two older brothers Noah and Cole have got male dogs… I suspect that had something to do with his reasoning to want a male.

I sure hope and yes I pray …a lot… that by Christmas time Reed and Charley can be in the field with Noah and his dog Dally and hopefully with Cole. Hoping that Reed can be shooting his 410 ga. that he got for his birthday and show his brothers how he can make feathers fog the air!!!! ( there are a couple of Charley video’s on my FB page)

I read a quote once that said, “Nothing is more expensive than a MISSED opportunity!” I don’t necessarily agree with the quote… but my friend and brother Dr. Jeff took the opportunity today to carry some birddogs to the field.

We carried Dr. Jeff’s dog Jack, my grandson Noah’s dog Dally, and three of mine…Mindy, Raylee, and Doc! We didn’t get many pictures… but we sure enjoyed the time in the field. Thank you, brother!
