We, in the Athens and surrounding area, are so very fortunate to have a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in our midst. If you don't know her, her name is Suzie DeGrasse and not only does she save and treat injured and sick wildlfe, she is a stellar human being. She sacrifices a lot to do what she does and relies on the community's support. This holiday season, will you consider taking a look at her Amazon wishlist of supplies and consider putting a few items in your shopping cart to help her out in her mission? Helping animals is her passion and I am personally so appreciative of the work she does. Here's the link to her wishlist https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ls/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_ws_Jt6lBbJ16CCS8?ie=UTF8&lid=ZF5GEDEFJW15&ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_ws_Jt6lBbJ16CCS8&ty=wishlist
And you can follow her FB page, Primarily 'Possums. Thank you!

The transparency that we have been working hard for is finally coming into fruition!

This is awesome--ACCAS heard our calls for more transparency about the shelter animals and responded!

(For the full Manager's Snapshot, go to https://www.accgov.com/snapshot)

Key:
- DAK: died at kennel
- DOA: dead on arrival
- RTO: return directly to owner without being impounded
- RTW: return to wild (for uninjured wildlife)

A little more info based on a question on a different page:
- Of the 11 dog euthanasias, only about 4 are dogs that made our webpage. This is pretty typical: we have 70-80 dogs each year that come in after being hit by cars or mauled by other animals that are beyond saving, even with the help of the Athenspets Medical Fund. So unless we have a culture change (people stop letting their dogs run at large, for example--see the extremely high number of RAL calls--or start rabies vaccinating their animals), that baseline level of shelter euthanasias is unlikely to move much.
- Animals brought to the shelter by their owners to be euthanized are independently evaluated by staff (not automatically euthanized). A fair number of those animals are made available, sometimes after vet care provided by the Medical Fund, sometimes after behavioral evaluations. There is no option to have the shelter euthanize an animal that is not being surrendered so the shelter staff retain control over the process and any euthanasias count in these numbers. (That's a good thing, I think.)

Athens-Clarke County is still having issues in regard to staffing and management of the county's animal shelter. During this summer after some of the ongoing shelter issues went public, a supervisor quit and was later replaced by a candidate hired by the Central Services director and the then-current shelter administrator---both of whom have been either demoted or fired. Now, the person who was recently hired to replace the former shelter supervisor is no longer there after having only worked there a few weeks. Athens-Clarke County is still in the process of hiring a director. In the meantime, the staff person who was the part-time volunteer coordinator is now the interim director of the shelter. The Animal Services Supervisor (then shelter administrator) who ordered the unnecessary deaths of 31 cats/kittens is still working there in a supervisory role and is still making decisions about the welfare of shelter animals and those in the community.

In the next few months, hiring qualified people for shelter supervisory roles is of utmost importance. If you know of a qualified individual with good leadership skills and a background in the field, please encourage them to apply.

Draw a Shelter Cat Project for Athens Area Kids

Recently, Athens area kids were asked to participate in an online project to bring more visibility to the animals at Athens-Clarke County Animal Services. Please enjoy the drawings that these young artists created and after viewing them, consider sharing this video to support both the kids and our local shelter animals. Athenspets is the non-profit that actively supports and promotes these shelter animals. The funds that are donated (any amount) go to help with their care and to increase their chances of getting out of the shelter alive.

Athens-Clarke County Animal Services has many cats and dogs awaiting rescue or adoption. Most of these cats/kittens are still at the shelter even though not all of them are indicated as such on the video. You may find out more about which cats are available for adoption/rescue by clicking on the Athenspets - GA link here: https://athenspets.net/cats-currently-shelter/

Today, I visited Marcia at Athens-Clarke County Animal Services, and she curled up in my scarf for a photoshoot. Not only does she have the most amazing golden eyes but she has a lovely warm personality once you give her a few minutes to get to know you. When you extend a hand, she will rub up against it and show you how affectionate she really is. Marcia is tired of living in a cage and is looking for a new owner to give her the love and safety she so deserves . To learn more about Marcia you can click on her Athenspets - GA link here: https://athenspets.net/Adoptables/52269-marcia/
