Sweet Jace is our last fur baby without a home to go to! Jace is around 2 years old weighing 58lbs. He is dog friendly, loves all people, enjoys playing, giving loads of kisses and cuddling. He knows how to sit, he knows his name, he’s obedient and wants to please. Jace is heartworm positive which we will be more than happy to explain the treatment process!

The “Count” Cooper (aka-Chevy) who was adopted last year and stopped by to see us with his family in March bringing a bunch of goodies/donations to his furry friends…just like all shelter pets is a true gem!💎🐾🩷

His fur mom messaged us his breed mixes after doing an Embarked test and WOW look at the results! ⬇️😍

Today our sweet Lucy fostered by Paige Buttram & family left on transport headed to Colorado with one of our wonderful rescue partners. Lucy as you can see was definitely spoiled while she waited in her temporary home 🏡 to find her family.🩷🐾 Lucy’s adopters when they saw her picture/s knew she was meant for them and have been eagerly awaiting her arrival.

A big Thank You to Judy Huemmer who transported Lucy this evening to catch her transport ride headed to Colorado.🥰

Saying goodbye is never easy and can be emotional, but when you foster a dog/cat you help them by being part of their journey to finding their happily ever after.🩷

🩷✈️Freedom Flight 4-18-24✈️🩷

After all the hard work, dedication, & time, that goes into planning these “Freedom Flights” there’s nothing better than waking up super early (3am) knowing that 46 sweet souls…many who had foster homes awaiting their arrival, or were already pre-adopted with their future families is simply as we say with our transports…The Best Part!🩷🫶🏼🐾🥹

Our sister shelter Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake took part in this flight as well! 👉🏻(Make sure to go like & follow their page)

These life saving missions would not be possible without Dog Is My CoPilot, Inc. who just recently flew their 32,000th furry love 🙀🩷🐾passenger to their home. A big Thank You to Petco Love & Lulu's Fund who sponsor these flights.✈️

Thank you Captain Katie for all you do as well and over thousands of miles and hours with the flight missions you do. (Not all heroes wear capes)🦸‍♀️✈️

Last…but not least, much love & admiration to our RockStar 🤩🥰northern partners who work tirelessly as well to give those with no voice a 2nd chance at a better life.

As we have mentioned many times, each furry love pictured has their own story to tell and we are so grateful we were able to take part in their journey. Winnie for example…entered our shelter (like many) very pregnant after trying to enter a local business seeking food/shelter from the cold. 😞 She birthed 6 pups on 2/14 and was fostered by our assistant manager Brittany. Winnie and her pups left this morning to their loving homes & Winnie will never have to worry about becoming pregnant again since she took the no more puppy pledge (spayed) recently.🩷

Our Sweet Luka got to have a day out with a wonderful volunteer family! This is what his Day Out was like according to them!

“My daughter, Alyssa, does volunteer hours for school and decided to do her hours at the Athen’s Animal Rescue Shelter. We decided to take Luka out for a play date. Oh, My Goodness! Why is this sweet young man in a shelter?
We have a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shephard, pit mix, and a Dutch Shephard mix (all rescues) Luka was an amazing gentleman form the word go.
Look if you do not want a dog that uses his manors ALL OF THE TIME! Well, Luka is not for you. Luka cannot be talked into jumping onto someone. He realizes someone my fall if he jumps on the wrong person.
We started off by loading Luka into my pickup truck. I don’t think he had ever been put into the backseat of a pickup before. He was scared and tensed but as I wrapped my arms around him to help him up, no sign of aggression whatsoever. Luka decided to lay across Alyssa’s legs with his nose out the open window all the way to Purtis Creek. WOW The smells! Luca enjoyed every smell from Athens to Purtis without ANY panting, bouncing around, growling, or stresses at all.
Luka was amazing on a leash. Now look, there were a lot of smells out there so yes, his four legs may have stepped a little faster than our two, BUT there were a ton of smells to be smelling! We would see a slight tug on the leash then he would stop and wait! How incredible is that?!
He loved our pace so he would be a GREAT hiking companion. He stepped in the lake but showed not much interest in being in it.
After Purtis Creek, MCDONALDS! The entire time in the truck and going through the drive through, Luka was a gentleman. No growling or barking at all. Luka had his ice cream on the way to the house. We learned that his tongue is as long as a McDonald’s cup is deep!
Now, at the house I do believe Luka met his first pig. He stepped out of the truck, went around the corner and was face to face with “the ugliest dog I have ever seen!” (the was Luka’s words). It was our pig, Tank. Stepped a way and then wanted to just go nose to nose with the pig and then really showed no interest. Chickens, nope. Turkeys don’t care. Ducks could not care any less.
We even put Luka in our camper. Never showed any stressors and even fell asleep with Alyssa as we were taking our own dogs out to the restroom. Had to be coached on how to get up on the couch and he sat and just smelled out the window.”

Early this morning before the sun rose our 2 purr-tastic volunteers Judy Huemmer & Stacie Flowers transported our feline beauties from Athens Animal Rescue Shelter & our sister shelter Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake to Fort Worth to catch their “Freedom Flight” to our northern partners.✈️ 🐾🩵

Congratulations to the SPCA of Texas team whose 5,000 cat took their Freedom Flight today! To celebrate there was cake for everyone to enjoy.🩷🐾😽👏🏻

Our sweet boy Duke (120 pounds full of love) took his “Freedom Ride” to one of our wonderful rescue partners.🩵🐾

Duke like many of the animals that enter our shelter was a stray brought in by AC. He was found in the middle of a busy highway and thankfully was not hit by oncoming traffic. As with every animal that enters our shelter he was scanned for a microchip by staff. To our surprise…Duke was chipped! After numerous attempts with the phone number showing on his chip information staff finally was able to get into contact with someone. Sadly, they were informed they had rehomed him and no longer wanted him.😓

We told Duke not to worry that we would find him a home or a rescue to go to. After our “volunteer” rescue coordinator reached out to several rescue partners Duke got his “Freedom Ride” and was all smiles when he met his foster mom-care taker until adopted out.

No matter if we drive 20 hours to do a transport or 2 hours, our mission has always been for the animals and their well being.🐾🐶

Star ⭐️

We wanted to take a minute and share an update on sweet Star who many of you donated towards her Sunshine Funds☀️a couple of weeks ago.🥰 Star had an FHO surgery (femoral head operation) because there was a fracture that couldn’t be repaired so instead of amputating they just took out the broken part because it can be a free floating joint and still function normal. Staff do physical therapy on leg three times a day & hoping to get full range of motion back.🩷🐶 Thank you again to everyone who donated & shared her post so that Star could get the surgery she so desperately needed.🩷⭐️ #Thankful

Sugar Bear had the BEST DAY EVER! She has been at our shelter for 60 days!! This sweet baby got to go on a fun-filled day. Started off at Sonic Drive-In for a sweet treat then headed over to Log Cabin to enjoy the lake. Before heading back to the shelter she helped the kids order some more summer treats Parrot Ice Shaved Ice and finally got to meet some more pup friends before going back to the shelter. Sugar Bear not only loved the lake but everyone that greeted her. She walks great on a leash and is potty trained. She was so excited to have a family for the day. Sugar Bear is available for adoption and would love to find her forever home.
