Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can be toxic and harmful to dogs if they drink or swim in water contaminated by it. The algae can appear as a green or greenish-brown scum on the surface of water, and blooms can produce toxins called cyanotoxins. Exposure to these toxins can be life-threatening to dogs and other animals, and there is no antidote. Go to an emergency vet if you suspect your dog has had contact. 🚑

Signs that water may contain blue-green algae include:
* A foul smell
* Discoloration
* Greenish foam, scum, or mats of algae floating on the surface
* Paint-like streaks in the water
To keep your dog safe, you can:
* Keep your dog away from discolored or suspicious water
* Offer fresh, clean drinking water from home when hiking
* Wash your dog and yourself with clean, fresh water immediately if they come into contact with blue-green algae

Pets go missing during the 4th of July holiday 60% more than any other time. Many shelters have to euthanize pets already in their care to make room. Don’t add to the problem - keep your dog home, inside and on a leash for potty those nights.

Fireworks can be very stressful for pets. We have products that help! Here are some tips to keep them calm and safe:

1. **Create a Safe Space:** Prepare a comfortable, quiet area in your home where your pet can retreat. This might be a crate, a basement, or a room away from windows and doors.

2. **Stay Indoors:** Keep pets inside during fireworks. Close windows and doors to minimize noise and prevent them from running away if they get scared.

3. **Use Background Noise:** Play calming music, white noise, or turn on the TV to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

4. **Distract with Toys and Treats:** Give your pet toys or long-lasting treats to keep them occupied and distracted from the noise.

5. **Stay Calm:** Pets can pick up on their owner's anxiety. Stay calm and act normally to help reassure them.

6. **Exercise Beforehand:** Take your dog for a long walk or engage in playtime to tire them out before the fireworks start.

7. **Comfort Items:** Provide your pet with their favorite blanket, toy, or an item of your clothing to help them feel secure.

8. **Consider Anxiety Aids:** There are options like anxiety wraps, pheromone diffusers, CBD treats or even medication if your pet has severe anxiety.

9. **ID and Microchip:** Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag and consider having them microchipped in case they escape.

10. **Stay With Them:** If possible, stay home with your pet during fireworks to offer comfort and reassurance.

Implementing these strategies can help your pet feel more secure and less anxious during fireworks displays.

If you commit to a dog who has hair that grows and mats, you need to train them to let you brush them - and you need to actually brush them. Matting close to the skin pulls at skin and sometimes even tears it. It hurts. They can’t tell you it hurts. They don’t show you it hurts. But it absolutely does.

Thank you again to our Rockstar Nina, for making these dogs comfortable.

Keeping a litter box clean is essential for several reasons other than that it makes your cat happy.

1. **Health and Hygiene**: A clean litter box helps prevent the spread of diseases and infections to both cats and humans. Accumulated waste can harbor harmful bacteria and parasites.

2. **Odor Control**: Regular cleaning reduces unpleasant odors. A dirty litter box can create a strong, offensive smell in your home.

3. **Cat Behavior**: Cats prefer a clean environment. A dirty litter box may discourage them from using it, leading to inappropriate elimination elsewhere in the house.

4. **Air Quality**: A clean litter box helps maintain better air quality in your home, reducing the risk of respiratory issues for both you and your cat.

5. **Early Detection of Health Issues**: Regular cleaning allows you to monitor your cat's waste, helping you detect any changes that could indicate health problems, such as diarrhea, blood, or changes in urine frequency or volume.

6. **Preventing Litter Box Aversion**: Keeping the litter box clean can prevent litter box aversion, where cats refuse to use their litter box due to its dirty state, leading to behavioral issues.

Overall, maintaining a clean litter box is crucial for the well-being of your cat and the cleanliness of your home.

Stretch Update: Stretch is thriving at Shelley’s and although he still limps from his broken leg he runs around the house like an Olympian. His new favorite place is under the dining room table and he is fed only canned food so of course his favorite thing is dry food. 🙄 Every day about five kibble pieces are thrown about the house for him to “hunt” and it seems to placate him. This time of year his real favorite place is the screened in porch tbh, he watches birds and chipmunks to his hearts delight. Stretch sends his love to all of his fans. 😘

Attention, Pomeroy Pet Lovers!

Last week, we sent a couple of boxes of treats to the Meigs Shelter. The staff accepting the donations were almost moved to tears. Let’s rally together and continue supporting them. If you’re in Pomeroy, please pick up some dog items during your grocery trip. If you’re visiting Athens, anything you buy at Friendly Paws for the shelter is at least 20% off, and we will handle the delivery. Alternatively, you can make a donation, and we’ll ensure they get what they need. This staff needs your support. ❤️‍🩹 Surrounding communities also encouraged to assist.

UPDATE: Thank you to the volunteer who came to deliverthese. We appreciate you!

Can we get a couple volunteers to take some boxes out to the Meigs and Vinton Shelters? Call the shop, please don’t comment. 740-593-5125 if you can help.

We have lots of Yummers sample bags of dehydrated food for the local rescues and the Athens Foodbank to use at treats. This is a wonderful food we may start stocking if we have enough interest. The staff is all trying it out over the next couple weeks.

Looking for a natural way to repel fleas and ticks? Wondercide can help. We have collars, spot treatments and sprays. Keep in mind these products are best used to repel and may need to be combined with sprays which are utilized throughout the week to be effective. Natural products are wonderful but can only do so much. Shelley’s Mikey has the collar and spot treatment as well as a chemical flea treat every 6 weeks rather than monthly. So far so good. 🤞 what natural products have you had success with?

EVENT IS CANCELLED, Stella is ADOPTION PENDING 💃 🎉

MEET & GREET SAT. JUNE 15th 10am-12pm at Friendly Paws.

Stella is approximately 9 months old and about 25 lbs. Stella is fostered with kids and a resident dog. Stella was left on the side of the road with her siblings. They were all adopted quickly but somehow Stella got left behind.

Chewing on bones and following her foster mom around the house are her favorite activities, other than meal times. She is working on socialization and is a very curious girl. She does ok with other dogs and cats as long as she’s slowly introduced. Her training is going wonderfully and she will sit and wait on command before opening the front door and before she gets her food; she’s also working on “shake.” Stella is a good girl about “potty outside” but will occasionally have accidents. She loves being around people and will an awesome addition to a family.

Stella is available through PAWS if Perry County. https://perryanimalwelfaresociety.com/paws-adoption-app

Kids 8-10 years old who are interested in animals? Upcoming Children's Program!

This summer break, the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center will be hosting its free online children’s program once again! In this week-long experience, children will have the chance to meet real veterinarians while learning how they care for animals. Each day focuses on a new topic and includes a fun activity children can do right in their own home!

Two sessions this summer break:
Session I: July 15th – 19th from 2:00pm - 3:30pm
Session II: August 19th - 23rd from 11:00am - 12:30pm
They are the same, only sign up for one.

The program runs Monday to Friday and is for children ages 8-10. This online program will be hosted via Zoom and the at-home activities will require common arts & craft materials.

This program is free to register but space is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. The July & August sessions are the same program, so please only register your child for one session this summer.
For any questions, please email us at [email protected].
