🩵"Is your tail always wagging, or are you just happy to see me?"🩵

Bourbon is ALWAYS happy to see new people! This happy hippo has been waiting since January 2024 for the paw-fect family to find him and love him forever and ever. February 19th will be Bourbon's 1 year in the Second Chance Program. Let's find him his forever Valentine before then!! Bourbon is good with kids, crate-trained, and house-broken! Bourbon is an escape artist, so a tall fence and supervision is required for this handsome guy! Bourbon would do best as an only doggo. He knows how to "sit" like the goodest boy! An active family with older kids, and NO cats would be his ideal home!

Interested in adopting the chonkiest boi ever?! Apply to meet Bourbon on our website, www.mrhumane.org . Once processed and approved, you will be contacted to schedule a meet and greet.

Bourbon's adoption fee is waived as he was rescued from an SOS list. He is neutered, microchipped, has his rabies and age-appropriate vaccines, and heartworm/flea/tick prevention. His adopter will also receive 1 free training session with our friends at PawsitivelyK9 right here in Athens.

🩵"I may not be Red Rover, but can I come over?"🩵

"Roses are Red, Violets are Blue....hey, wait! That's my name!!"
Meet Blue! This beautiful boy knows how to sit like the goodest boy! Blue is currently in foster care after being rescued from an SOS list. He has done well with most dogs that he has been introduced to during supervised playtime, and currently lives with another doggo in foster care. Blue does need some leash work, but does really well with a harness as opposed to a leash. He is a medium energy dude and loves a good game of tug-o-war.....he's never lost!

If interested in meeting Blue, please apply on our website. Once processed and approved, you will be contacted to schedule a meet and greet. www.mrhumane.org

Blue's adoption fee is currently waived as he was rescued from an SOS list. Blue is neutered, microchipped, has his rabies and other age-appropriate vaccines, and has flea/tick/heartworm prevention. His adopter will also receive 1 free training session with a local trainer right here in Athens.

🩵"You’re one fine-looking mother-pupper"🩵

Charming young Turnip would make the paw-fect date this Valentine's Day! All the other doggos would be so jealous of his good looks and pretty coat 😊 Turnip is patiently waiting in foster care with another pupper and a kitty cat! He gets a gold star for sharing his toys and staying close to his person when they go for walks! Turnip is learning what a leash is, but so far, he has done well with not wandering during their walks of the property.

If Turnip sounds like your new boyfriend, apply to meet him and seal the deal! Once processed and approved, you will be contacted to schedule a meet and greet with the foster family! www.mrhumane.org

Turnip's adoption fee is $80 and includes neuter, rabies vaccine, microchip, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and other age-appropriate vetting. His adopter will also receive 1 free training session with a local trainer right here in Athens!

🩷"Since chocolate is toxic to me, how about a little sugar?"🩷

Wonderful Wanda is as SWEET as sugar and spice and everything nice! This senior gal is currently in foster care waiting for the paw-fect retirement home to open up for her! Wanda just needs a few things in life......a comfy couch, a full food bowl, and some occasional short walks to make sure her sniffer is still sniffing! 🐾
She currently lives with male and female dogs and is doing great! She walks well on a leash and appears to be house-trained. She goes in her crate without any problems. Wanda would do best in a quieter home- loud noises startle her, and with other low-energy doggos. Wanda's foster mom states that she has not barked one time since being there, but she doesn't love when the other dogs get all riled up! Wanda does well with kids, but she is not a very affectionate doggie. Occasional pets are fine, but she's not a cuddler or attention hog. So older children who understand her boundaries would be ideal.
Wanda would love a low-key home and a comfy couch to enjoy her golden years! Could that be your home!? 🩷

If you are interested in adding a low-maintenance furry friend to your home, please apply to meet Wanda on our website. Once processed and approved, the foster family will contact you for a meet and greet. www.mrhumane.org

Wanda's adoption fee is $40 and includes spay, rabies vaccine, microchip, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and other age-appropriate vetting. Her adopter will also receive 1 free session with a local trainer right here in Athens!

You may have noticed some construction going on at the Larry Dean Wallace Sr. Animal Shelter and Adoption Center this week. Thanks to an AMAZING donor, the dog kennels got an upgrade! Before, they had a solid wall and nothing to look at. Now, our indoor doggies have clear windows to see out of. And our inside/outside doggies now have a clear view of the outside world!

The dogs in 1-10 were more than a lil excited today. They LOVE their new windows 🙌🙌 The dogs are so happy with their new views!

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Marcia Alexander for her generous donation!! Marcia is an avid MRHS supporter and we appreciate all that she does for our shelter animals!! ❤️🐾

🩵"Are your paws tired? Because you’ve been chasing a frisbee through my mind all day!"🩵
Okay, that one was pretty corny we have to admit :)

Zach here is ready and waiting for the paw-fect hooman to come adopt him and play frisbee with him all day! He is a big LOVE bug and he absolutely LOVES the pool. Zach is house-trained and is learning to walk on a leash like the perfect gentleman that he is. Zach has gotten along great with other dogs and is a playful, higher energy dude! He currently is in foster care with another MRHS alum! He is cat-approved, in that he's kinda afraid of them. A house with older kids who will play the day away with him would make this guy's day! :)

If Zach sounds like your Valentine's Day dreamboat, apply to meet this handsome guy! Once processed and approved, you will be contacted to schedule a meet and greet with his foster family. www.mrhumane.org

Zach's adoption fee has been waived, as he was rescued from an SOS list. Zach is neutered, microchipped, and had his age-appropriate vaccines. His adopter will receive 1 free training session with a local trainer right here in Athens!

🩵"Did you win best in show? Because you look like a winner to me."🩵

Strider here is a senior fella looking for a retirement home to call his own! He is currently being loved on by one of our amazing foster families, and he is just a superstar! Dogs, kids, cats.....nothing phases this big guy! His foster mom has nothing but glowing reviews about him:
"What a gem! Strider is laid back, quiet, calm, and has such a gentle personality. He is a very well-behaved boy! He likes to relax near you and get pets and luvins'. He also really likes to go on short walks, take naps and his quiet time too (after all, he's 10 years old). Strider rides well in the car, walks great on a leash, and is house-trained. Pretty much ignores Finn (the younger dog in the home) and our cats. He’s pretty perfect!! :)"

If you're looking for a low-key dude to cuddle with this Valentine's Day, Strider might just be the guy for you! 🩵 Apply to meet him on our website, www.mrhumane.org . Once processed and approved, our foster family will schedule a time to do a meet and greet.

Strider's adoption fee is $40 and includes age-appropriate vetting, neuter, rabies vaccine, microchip application, flea/tick/heartworm prevention. His adopter will also receive 1 free training session with a local trainer right here in Athens!

Well, considering she no longer has a tail......this is appropriate :)

"My name is Precious Pebbles and I am looking for a lifetime commitment. Ideally a family that likes to cuddle and spend quality time with me. I’m an easy girl to please whether we go for long hikes, strolls on the beach, have a picnic or we can just stay home and curl up with a good book or watch a movie- I’m just going to be happy to be with you!! 🩷 I get along with other family members, I currently have two older small foster siblings and a younger large foster sister; we are all best doggy friends! I like hooman friends too, older and younger. You see, my dream is to have my forever people look at me like I know I will look at them. I sit like the goodest girl ever, I don’t chew anything and I don’t potty in the house. I vow to love you forever and be the goodest girl you’ve ever had. I can’t buy you roses but I can keep your feet warm, drown your worries away and make you feel loved. I want to be your furever valentine so come meet me and I won’t let you down!"

Doesn't Miss Pebbles sound like the paw-fect Valentine's Day date?! Apply to meet this sweet sweet girl on our website, www.mrhumane.org . Once processed and approved, the foster family will schedule a time to do a meet and greet!

Pebbles's adoption fee is $80 and includes all age-appropriate vetting, microchip application, rabies vaccine, spay, flea/tick/heartworm prevention. Her adopter will also receive 1 free training session with a local trainer right here in Athens!

Please please please spay and neuter your pets! 🐾 These poor pitiful puppies were dumped in Athens today at the Food City Gas station. 2 weeks old is wayyyyyyy too young to be separated from their mama. Eleven 2-week old puppies now in need of care!

Our clinic front desk staff and technicians jumped into action to care for them while we tried to find fosters or a rescue to take them. All 11 pups are currently in foster care with staff/volunteers, after being wormed, vaccinated, fed and bathed. They are wormy and hungry hungry little hippos this evening 💛

If you feel lead to, please consider donating to help us care for these pups until they are old enough for adoption, or are rescued. Wormer, vaccines, puppy food, wet puppy food, puppy formula, puppy pads.....it all adds up!

And please, spay and neuter your pets! Prevent a litter, fix your critter!

Did you know that February is National Spay and Neuter Awareness Month?? With love in the air for Valentine's Day 💕, we wanted to take a minute to talk about spaying and neutering your pets. 💕🐾

A little PSA from our clinic staff:
"Tis the season! Mating season is upon us. Gestation period for cats and dogs is 60-63 days. So, if they are mating now, in mid to late April, we will begin seeing puppies and kittens surrendered to the shelter.
Research tells us that in 9 years, 1 unaltered cat can create over 10 million kittens, if no intervention, and all of their litters are unaltered. That is a staggering number!
How can we help to avoid this issue? Well, I’m glad you asked. Every dog and cat should be spayed or neutered. Because of our out-of-control animal population in this area, there is no reason anyone should breed their animals. People will tell us that they want their female to have at least one litter before they have them fixed. Well, guess what. Several puppies of that litter you just had to have will end up in the shelter and it won’t be your problem, it will be the humane society’s problem.
There are no published reports that I know of encouraging at least one litter adding to the health of an animal. As a matter of fact, there are reports telling us that the chances for your dog/cat having cancer increases with every heat cycle a female has. Spaying and neutering can also lower the drive for animals to roam and it can decrease aggression and marking.
The good thing is we have a low cost spay/neuter clinic right here in our back yard! Please encourage everyone you know to have their animals spayed or neutered."

Our Spay and Neuter Clinic offers low-cost services to the community, and other local rescues. Our website includes a more inclusive list of services provided, but for a cat to be vetted the cost is $80, and dog vetting ranges from $100-$125 depending on weight. Vetting includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccine, heartworm testing, and age-appropriate vaccines.
Give them a call at 423-649-0370 to schedule an appointment!

You've all seen our SOS posts for dogs and cats needing homes who are at risk of euthanasia. The City of Athens Animal Shelter only has so many kennels to house SO MANY animals. Please, please consider spaying and neutering your pets!!

🩷🐾Tis the season for Valentine's Day cards 🐾🩷

The past few years, our shelter animals received SO MUCH LOVE from the community for Valentine's Day. Cards were mailed in and dropped off. Local students made some of the best homemade cards that were dropped off. We decorated our lobby and kitten room and hallway with all the beautiful cards we received. And the animals loved it!

What better way to celebrate our first Valentine's Day in our new location than by decorating the space with beautiful Valentine's Day cards! If you'd like to make a shelter pets day a little brighter, mail in or drop off a Valentine's Day card for them!

Now that we've had a moment to breathe after the past 10 days, we want to take a moment to spread awareness about some pretty special people in Meigs County.🐾💜🧡

Meigs County currently does not have a municipal animal shelter. There is a group of dedicated residents working hard to help the unwanted animals of Meigs County and bring awareness to the problem. A few of whom are also affiliated with MRHS too!

Animal Rescue Facility of Meigs County (ARFMC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working hard to change animal welfare for the better in their community. Check out their website below for links to their Amazon wish list and a link to donate directly to their animal care fund! This group is also working to share adoptable dogs in their care on their website to make them easily accessible to the community! Keep an eye on the exciting things happening in Meigs County and consider reaching out to their Board members via email if interested in helping them in the process!

Check out their website below! And be sure to follow them on Facebook too!

"What is McMinn Regional Humane Society?"

"What do you mean YOU can't you take this animal I found?!? Why not?!?!"

"I need these cats fixed."

“I need food.”

“There’s a stray dog in my neighborhood. Can you come get it?”

“When are you open?”

These are just a few of the phone calls and messages we receive on a daily basis. So, we wanted to take a minute this morning and re-introduce ourselves and clarify some things.

🐾"Where is McMinn Regional Humane Society (MRHS) located, and what do you do??"
The MRHS Adoption Center is located at 320 S. Jackson St. We have 1 full-time Outreach & Adoption Coordinator, 1 full-time Administrative Assistant, and 2 part-time Cat Room Technicians. These individuals are responsible for processing applications, scheduling and conducting meet and greets, working with rescues for transporting animals, pet food giveaways, feline care and cleaning, and daily operations.
And on the other side of things, we are primarily made up of volunteers. Our volunteers focus on the socialization of dogs and cats, helping to staff adoption events on and off-site, among MANY other things. Media, social media, meet and greets, fostering, laundry, the list goes on!
MRHS works in cooperation with the City of Athens Animal Shelter staff and are invited to be on site in an effort to help accomplish all of those things.

🐾"How do I drop off an animal at the City of Athens Animal Shelter?"
The City of Athens Animal Shelter serves all of McMinn County and is responsible for all intakes and reclaims of animals, along with the daily care of animals. The shelter is located at 320 S. Jackson St. If you need to surrender an animal, your own or a stray, you must call Shelter Management and schedule an appointment to bring the animal in. 423-744-2747
Concerns of abandonment or the welfare of an animal should be reported to the non-emergency number of your respective law enforcement agency.
Stray holds are strictly enforced and once completed, the animal becomes available for adoption. Shelter Management and MRHS work together to find the paw-fect homes for adoptable animals.
The MRHS Adoption Center staff and volunteers cannot take animals in. When you call and tell us you're bringing in an animal, "or else", we can't help you, unfortunately. Unless a volunteer is there and willing to take that animal into their own home, with their own animals, take responsibility for getting it vaccinated (because it's usually after hours), and foster it until we can find it a new home.....MRHS cannot intake animals. The ultimatums break our hearts and keep us up at night, but unfortunately, the MRHS staff and volunteers cannot take them.

🐾"Who medically cares for the shelter animals?"
Shelter Management handles all vaccines upon intake of an animal, along with administering daily medications as needed.
Our MRHS Spay & Neuter Clinic team handles surgeries and some advanced medical care of shelter animals.

🐾"Where is the MRHS Spay & Neuter Clinic located?"
The Spay & Neuter Clinic is located at 320 S. Jackson St. Our clinic is staffed by 1 full-time veterinarian, 1 part-time veterinarian, 2 full-time technicians, 1 full-time receptionist, our Volunteer Clinic Coordinator, and Clinic Office Manager.
In addition to caring for all shelter animals, the clinic staff also work with many local animal rescues and accept patients from the community for low-cost spay and neuter services, vaccines, and flea/tick/heartworm preventative.

🐾Check out our website for additional information on clinic services, ways to donate and help, and ways to get involved!!
