Here are some ways to celebrate National Dog Day:
🐶Spend quality time with your dog but taking them on a walk, playing fetch, or give them a couple extra treats today.
🐶Adopt a dog: Consider giving a loving home to a dog in need. Your new best friend is waiting on you!
🐶Volunteer at a shelter: Help care for dogs waiting for adoption.
🐶Donate dog food, blankets, treats, beds, laundry detergent, etc to your local shelter

🐱 Foster a kitten: If you are not ready to fully commit to adopting a kitten, you can still help by fostering one.
🐱 Volunteer at Athens Clarke County Animal Services. They are always in need for help. Besides, what’s a better way to spend your day than helping with kittens 💜

Reminder we will be closed on July 4th in celebration of Independence Day. This day can be scary for our 4 legged family members. Here are a few tips to help keep them safe:

🎆Keep your pets inside during fireworks. The loud sounds can be scary and your pet may run away.
🎆Make sure your pet is wearing their collar with identification - their name, your phone number and microchip tag if they have one.
🎆Turn on a white noise machine, television, or radio to let block out the noise.
🎆If your pet needs anxiety medication to help them stay calm during the fireworks, give it to them at least 1 hour before fireworks start.

💊If your pet needs any prescriptions filled, don’t wait until it’s too late! Call us sooner rather than later!

As the 4th of July approaches, many people are planning their vacations, and it’s essential to consider the wellbeing of your furry friends during this busy time.

If you’re planning to board your pet, it’s crucial to ensure their vaccinations are current. Different kennels may have specific requirements regarding vaccines, so give them a call to confirm what your pet needs to stay healthy and safe during their stay.

Are you bringing your pet on vacation with you and your pet gets motion sick or anxious on car rides? Give us a call - we have medication to help with that!

Today is Veterinary Appreciation Day. It takes a lot of empathy, patience, continuing education, compassion and hard work to work in the field of veterinary medicine. So we want to send a huge shout out to not only our receptionists, assistants, licensed technicians and veterinarians, but to the entire veterinary community for being a voice for the ones that do not! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!!

☀️Summer is a fantastic time for outdoor adventures, but it's essential to keep your furry friends safe during the warm months. Dogs can be particularly vulnerable to summer hazards, so here are some important considerations to ensure they enjoy the season safely☀️

Heatstroke 🥵
🐾 Dogs can easily overheat, especially breeds with thick coats or short snouts. Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day; early mornings or late evenings are better times for exercise. Always provide ample water and access to shade. Signs of heatstroke include heavy panting and difficulty breathing.

Burns from hot pavement 🔥
🐾 High temperatures can make surfaces like asphalt, concrete, metal, and rocks too hot for dogs to walk on, which can burn their sensitive paws.

Dehydration 💦
🐾 As temperatures rise, dogs have to work harder to regulate their body temperature, which can lead to dehydration. Make sure your dog has access to fresh water and shade when outside.

Sunburn 🥵
🐾 Dogs can get sunburned from too much sun exposure, even if their fur protects them from the sun. UV rays can damage skin cells quickly, often in less than an hour. To protect your dog, limit their time in direct sunlight and consider using pet-safe sunscreens for areas with less fur, like their nose and ears.

Bites and stings 🐜🐝
🐾 Stinging insects like bees and wasps can be a hazard, especially for puppies who might explore gardens and try to eat them. Dogs off-lead might also be at risk if they rummage around in undergrowth. Tick bites can spread diseases like Lyme Disease and Anaplasmosis and mosquitoes spread heartworms so make sure to keep them on their monthly preventative.

Cars 🚗
🐾 Never leave a dog unattended in a car, even for a few minutes. Cars can quickly reach dangerous temperatures, even with windows cracked. Dogs can suffer heatstroke, leading to brain damage or death. Leave your dog at home if you can't take them with you. If you see a dog in a hot car, call authorities or try to locate the owner.

Water safety 🌊
🐾 Whether you're at the beach, lake, or pool, never assume your dog can swim. Start with a doggy life jacket and supervise them at all times. Rinse off your dog after swimming to remove chlorine or salt and prevent skin irritation.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure your dog stays safe and enjoys the summer fun right alongside you.

How important is heartworm prevention you might wonder. The answer is very! This is a video of microfilaria - aka immature heartworms or 'baby heartworms'. In this video, you can see the microfliaria squirming around the red blood cells. 😖 Microfilaria circulate mainly through the blood vessels and mature in the heart and lungs. Once matured, the worms can grow up to a foot long and can live anywhere between 5 and 7 years! Without treatment, heartworm disease can lead to death. This can be easily prevented with a once month chewable pill or a once a year injection.
