New and more affordable technologies are now becoming available in the treatment of back injuries in small breed dogs!

Small breed dogs — including dachshunds and French bulldogs — have a high risk of developing a herniated disc in their middle back, which can lead to partial or complete paralysis in the hindlegs. Until recently, the only treatment for dogs that do not respond to rest and therapy has been a costly decompressive surgery that involves removing the herniated disc.

Now, thanks to a new treatment developed by Texas A&M University professor Dr. Nick Jeffery, more dog owners will be able to afford treatment for herniated discs, which affects hundreds of thousands of dogs in the United States alone.

🐂 In honor of Fall calving season, I recently reviewed 406 bovine dystocia cases from 2 teaching hospitals. The mean duration prior to them getting to a veterinarian was 12.6 hours. Fortunately, the median was 4, but 58% still took longer than 3 hours to get veterinary attention. This represents a great opportunity for client education to get them in early to improve dam and calf outcome! 🐂

Deceased two-headed calf delivered via C-section today. 1 in a 100,000 calf births may present like this. Conjoined twins are a sporadic and certainly rare occurrence. In this particular calf, a condition known as Arthrogyrposis Multiplex causing the crooked legs, spine and joints was also present. The cow (mother) is continuing to do well. Will return her back to pasture tomorrow.

Interesting day at the office.
