Kai's K9's - Dog Training Solutions

Kai's K9's - Dog Training Solutions Atlanta-based dog trainer with over 10 years of professional dog experience. Hi! I’ve always had a passion for animals, particularly dogs.

My name is Kaitlin, or Kai for short!

I'm the owner and sole trainer at Kai's K9's located west of Atlanta, GA. As a kid, I was known as the “animal whisperer” in my family–-always caring for, reading, or watching documentaries about them. In fact, my first training experiment was when I was just 6 years old. I taught my family's crazy chocolate lab, Millie, to jump through hula-hoops! I was als

o the only one in our family who could calm her down when she was off the rails (that dog needed a little more training than knowing how to jump through hula-hoops). Being able to truly understand animals, dogs in particular, requires a 6th sense. Having a natural connection with another species doesn’t come easily for most people, but it's second nature to me. I approach training each dog with a similar structure, but no two dogs will be trained exactly the same way, because no two dogs are the same. It all depends on what your pet is receptive to, and figuring out the why behind what they do. My professional experience with dogs spans over a decade, ranging from grooming, to specializing in handling aggressive, reactive dogs, to sitting in during surgeries as an assistant veterinarian technician, to managing a locally-owned dog daycare in the heart of Atlanta. Looking back on these experiences, I've realized one common denominator they all share: I would always go out of my way to work with the misunderstood dogs. The ones no one wanted to deal with. The ones no one could seem to calm down, get to listen, or even go near without being afraid. No one asked me to take on these dogs, I simply wanted to. They just needed someone to understand. I'd shadow the worker who loved them as well. The one who also saw something special in them that no one else did. Over these years, within my roles, I studied closely under local trainers who specialize in dog behavior and aggression, as well as advanced training for service work. The last couple of years I’ve studied and researched dog behavior and psychology on my own, and feel confident in myself to take the plunge into starting my own training service.

Training and working with dogs in any step of life really is my biggest passion-–being able to help a family understand their dog and form a bond they never thought they could have is life-changing. A confident dog is a happy dog. A happy dog is a happy home.

Hello friends,

I have some bittersweet news to share:

Due to health reasons, I have left Petsmart.

Thank you to all of your support over the last 2 years. Every moment with each and every one of you was incredibly significant to me and I will cherish all the memories of being able to help all the lives I met during my time there, whether four-legged or two-legged. 💕

That being said, I am pursuing my own dog training business once again! I understand and have no hard feelings if you’d like to unfollow this account now—Petsmart is the bees-knees and I HIGHLY recommend any of their trainers in the north GA area. 💪🏻

However, if you’d like to tag along and follow this new chapter, welcome to the wonderful world of Kai’s K9’s! 😊 👋

If you or a loved one are interested, I am offering In-Home, Outdoor Group Sessions, and Virtual Training! There will be very limited openings as I am doing this a few hours a week on the side of my new job. Spots are filling up super fast, so I recommend booking ASAP to save your spot ☺️

Feel free to DM or reach out to me on my contact points listed in my bio.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read all of this. I hope to continue touching many more lives over the coming years!

-Kaitlin

Socialization should be your first goal when starting out with your puppy because it can only be accomplished when a puppy is young AND it has a huge impact not only on the type of dog you will have when they mature (social versus nervous).

Puppies are in a critical period of socialization from about 4 weeks of age to about 14 weeks (this range may vary based on the breed). During this window it is important that the puppy is properly socialized because their brains are the most receptive to learning about the world. Proper socialization is the key to the friendly and social dog.

It is important to stress that socialization is not exposure. It is far more complex than simply taking your new puppy places with you. In fact, for some puppies exposure can be too overwhelming and can create more fear. Socialization is about helping your puppy build positive associations.

When setting up socialization experiences it is always important that you carefully observe your puppy’s body language. Puppies and dogs communicate active enjoyment and stress through their bodies, and it goes far beyond a tail wag. Small signals like licking lips, dropping the head, yawning, and scratching can all indicate stress. Becoming proficient at reading your puppy will help you learn when your puppy is having and good time (and building those essential positive associations) vs. when a situation could be too overwhelming, and we need to back off!

Our goal is for the puppy to have a choice to interact or to retreat and to reward that bravery and interaction with high-value reinforcers instead of being forced into situations that cause stress and assuming the puppy will “get used to it”.

🐶Intro-
Sweet Winston started his first day of Bootcamp today!! We're so happy to have him and he's settling in super well 😊

📋Deets-
Winston recently found his furever home, but is struggling finding his confidence (don't we all?!). He's timid around anyone who isn't Mom, and displays signs of trust issues with men. We want to make sure he finds his confidence and we hope to see a whole ✨️new and improved pup✨️ by the end of his bootcamp!

(His older brother, Maximus, will be making a brief appearance near the tail end of Winston's stay so I can work on each of them independently, as well as do some cross-over training together! 💪🏻)

It's gonna be a fun month! 🐶🐶

Two of my favorite dogs I've ever worked with had human names--one was called Kevin, the other was Boris. You can never be mad at a dog with names like those--it's physically impossible.

Let’s face it, some dogs seem to fit into a human name better than others. It's becoming pretty trendy to give your dog a human name, and in an age where some couples are choosing dogs over human children, it can save you a lot of questioning...
