If your dog will take commands from a dinosaur, we can pretty confidently say, they will take commands from anyone. One of the most common questions we get from our board and train clients is, “Will my dog listen to me when the training is over?”There is definitely a transition period when the dog goes home. They may likely try to revert back to old ways when there wasn’t much structure. However, we work through this process by generalizing their training as much as possible. We teach them to be calm and complete commands in our home, outside running around on our 6 acres, and out in public like at Home Depot. Let’s talk puppy biting/chewing.
So, you’re having issues with your puppy nipping and chewing. This can be caused by a few things. Dogs naturally communicate with their mouths. It’s how moms correct their puppies and how the puppies play with each other. Your dog trying to communicate with you like this shouldn’t be punished. You need to teach your dogs other ways to engage and communicate with you!
Second, your puppy has growing teeth!! Biting and chewing can help soothe this pain. We want to encourage this by redirecting our chewing pups onto items that they are allowed to chew on. And we can even turn this into relationship building and play with them and their chew appropriate toy! Once we get out of that teething stage we start to see severe biting and chewing problems subside as long as we have given them a correct outlet for it!
The biggest tip of all though is management!! Don’t let your puppy free to roam around the house. If we do this, not only are we letting them self reward by chewing inappropriate items, we also run the risk of them chewing and swallowing something that can hurt them!! Keep your puppy in sight, and when you don’t have time to engage with them, this is when we can practice our crate training!
