Esther and I competed in a frisbee event a week or two ago. Not my usual type of thing… I usually stick to working the dogs. But after loosing my mother in January; and with my son getting closer to 2yrs old; I seem to have re-discovered the value of simply doing some thing “just for fun”!

Puttin’ John Connor’s nose to work a little bit. He’s gonna be a good scent dog, but I don’t think he’ll be on quite the same level as his mom is… not that he lacks the capability, he’s just not quite as neurotic about as Esther is. She will search and search and search all day and night because she has this burning-need to find the thing she was asked to find, and she can’t be happy until she finds it. John isn’t like that. John will search and search and search all day and night because I’m asking him to. He’s driven by the approval of his handler, where Esther is driven by excitement of completing a task. I think this is a common difference between male and female dogs, and it’s why I typically prefer females. Especially for protection work. But I really like John a lot though, and I have no concerns about his ability to excel in scent work. Honestly, he’ll probably stand out compared to a lot of dogs… But it’s just not the field of work where he’s really going to shine the most. He’s going to be extremely agile, and he’s also an amazingly quick learner. Picks up on new things super fast. He’s hard headed and fights me on a lot of stuff that he doesn’t want to do, but he understands what he’s being asked very quickly. What we’re going to be capable of accomplishing obedience/task-wise is going to be really cool. But more than anything else, John just wants to bite down on something (or someone), and shake his damn head back and forth as hard as he can while he does it😅 He’d wrestle with me all damn day if I let him . I frequently get asked the question, “How do you teach your dogs to find ___?” Well, here ya go! This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this with Scooby! I’ve thrown a ball to him a few times. As well as a stick. But this was the first time that I’ve ever attached a name to an object, and asked him to find it all on his own, without any reference as to where the object was. People live to overcomplicate things, and make them more difficult than they need to be. I try not to be like that. No treats. No toys. None of that stuff. Just me, the dog, and a leash. My physical and verbal praise is all the dog needs to figure out what I want it to do when I say the word “leash”. Of course, not all dogs are capable of picking up on things as quickly as Scooby here. Genetics certainly play a big role in the dogs ability and drive to accomplish these kinds of tasks. RAW AND UNCUT Training ain’t gotta be pretty. You just gotta do it. How do y’all utilize meal-time to train #ServiceDogs ? At Sons of Thor K-9, the day it’s decided that a specific pup will be trained for medical or psychiatric service work, we start working on some serious #ImpulseControl ! The dogs are put in a “place” command, and they watch me portion out each dogs meal. Then they watch me take all the full bowls of raw food and set them down on the ground, all while maintaining their “place” commands. If those commands are broken at any point during the process, I stop what I am doing and return the dog to its original “place”. The “place” is never given in a consistent location, or on a consistent surface. Each night, it is somewhere different than it was the last. This ensures that our #ServiceDogsInTraining do not simply become used to performing a routine. Based on my experience in the real world, life has a tendency to break routine. Things generally never go according to plan. And for those people and their dogs who are severe creatures of habit with strict routines and schedules for everything that they do; when life inevitably throws them through a loop and they are forced to break said routines, they have a difficult time keeping themselves from spiraling out of control. Most often they will blame their “anxiety” for their inability to keep it together. But upon observation of these situations, what I have found is that the majority of the time the real issue is a simple lack of practice or preparation for any sort of alteration to their daily routine. They are so busy trying to create a life of controlled comfort, that they do not prepare themselves or their dogs to live life on LIFE’S terms. And rest assured, life will bow before the terms that you try and set for it. Last couple minutes of a 30 minute “place” command💪🏼 Sons of Thor’s “Scooby Doo” (far right),is still available! That boy LOVES to bite! I thought at one point (when the pups were around 8-10 weeks old), that Scooby would make a good dog for a first-time Malinois/Dutchy handler… I will be the first to admit, I WAS WRONG!
