The Crikey Critters Story
My inspiration, idol, and number one role model Steve Irwin instilled in me the passion for wildlife conservation. I grew up in a small town in East Texas with not much to do but watch the Crocodile Hunter, fish, and catch turtles and frogs for hours on end daily. I didn’t realize it then but Steve was the driving force of who I am today and what I live for. His enthusiasm for wildlife embedded in me a need to follow in his foot steps and spread the message of wildlife conservation.
As I got older I knew that one day I was going to be just like Steve and share my passion with the world. I was devastated by his passing and felt as if I had lost my father. Shortly after he passed at 9 years old I wrote a lengthy letter letting out my emotions about loosing Steve and drew out blue prints to my future zoo “Steve Irwin Memorial Zoo” that I wanted to open in Australia and sent them to the Irwin family
Fast forward 10 years, I attended college for my bachelors degree in biology and began working my first wildlife job at the San Angelo Nature Center. There working with native West Texas wildlife, I developed my animal husbandry and education skills. I grew so much as a wildlife conservationist there but knew there was more opportunity out there for me to spread my passion even more with wildlife.
Then came the zoo, after leaving the nature center I moved back to East Texas to my home town to figure out my next move. To my surprise a local zoo had opened while I was away. Immediately I found myself fully engulfed at the East Texas Zoo and Gator Park. There is where my real wildlife experience began and my extreme animal husbandry skills grew. The longer I was there the more doors and opportunities opened up to me. I knew that it was just the beginning.
