A few weeks ago, I found a set of eggs that were buried in the substrate of the parents’ enclosure, so I put them in the incubator as I normally do. These eggs were a bit water logged but I’ve seen swollen eggs hatch plenty of times, so I didn’t worry much about it. Yesterday I noticed that one of the eggs had failed and the outer layer of calcium was peeling off the other. I pulled both babies out and they were unlike any other chahoua I’d ever seen.
➡️ The color of both was kind of silver-gray and with very unique pattern.
➡️ Both had white stripes up the sides of their abdomens and under their chins.
➡️ The tails of both geckos were a consistent gold-gray color without much contrast or pattern.
➡️ Both were slightly deformed with kinked tails and curved spines.
➡️ The yolk was completely absorbed by both babies and there was none left in the eggs. Based on their condition, both seemed “ready to hatch.”
I don’t know if their color and pattern have something to do with the fact that these eggs took on a lot of water when they were buried in the parents enclosure before I found them, or if something else is happening here. Just thought they were interesting and wanted to share, even though nature can be cruel at times.
I’ve never seen a Sorak crested gecko in person, but based on photos, these two Chahoua reminded me of Soraks in some ways (color, pattern).
Due to their deformities, neither baby survived 💔
