With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.
Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.
If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
If the pavement is too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Make sure to be aware of the dangers hot pavement can have on your pet's paws.
Tornadoes form during intense thunderstorms and can reach wind speeds of 200+ mph. Although tornadoes can occur anywhere, they are prevalent in the Southeast and Midwest. Stay informed by downloading the FEMA app and signing up for weather reports and evacuation notices.

VCA Animal Hospitals in Georgia & Alabama Partner with Royal Canin to Recycle Pet Food Bags
VCA Animal Hospitals in Georgia and Alabama are excited to announce a new partnership with Royal Canin to make it easier for pet owners to recycle their empty pet food bags. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing waste, we have set up pet food bag recycling stations at all VCA animal hospital locations throughout the two states.
Here's how it works:
1. Bring your empty, clean, and dry Royal Canin pet food bags to your local VCA Animal Hospital in Georgia or Alabama.
2. Look for the specially marked recycling bin in the lobby or reception area.
3. Place your empty bags in the bin - it's that easy!
The pet food bags collected will be sent to TerraCycle, where they will be cleaned, shredded, and turned into new recycled products like park benches, tote bags, and shipping pallets, keeping this hard-to-recycle waste out of landfills.
VCA is always looking for ways to be a more sustainable, environmentally-friendly company. Partnering with Royal Canin on this recycling initiative is a win for our hospitals, our clients, and the planet.
According to Royal Canin, over 8 million pounds of pet food bags end up in landfills each year in the US. By recycling these bags, VCA and Royal Canin customers can reduce waste and support the manufacturing of new eco-friendly products.
To find out if your local VCA Animal Hospital is participating in this recycling program, call them directly or visit https://vcahospitals.com/. Together we can make a positive impact for pets, people and the planet!

The Raw Truth
Why it can be dangerous for your cat to eat raw meat.
We all know it as "the cone of shame" but it actually has a fancier name! The Elizabethan Collar (aka E-collar) is widely used in the veterinary industry to prevent pets from worsening certain ailments. The E-Collar isn't always popular fashion with pets and over time alternatives have been created, such as the tubular collar. These are both important tools for your pet's healing and should be used as directed. Learn more about them here, from VCA!: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/dog-behavior-problems-elizabethan-collars

Don't let his big and strong appearance fool ya - Oliver is a total love bug!
Oliver is a six-year-old pit bull mix who was rescued from a county animal control. He LOVES to give hugs and kisses, and snuggle time with those he cares about. At the shelter, he has shown to be good with other pups and enjoys playtime with them. While in foster care, Oliver has proven to not only be amicable with other dogs but with cats who are familiar with and comfortable around dogs.
Oliver is 71 pounds, and still working on his leash skills, so we recommend he go to experienced adopters who can match his strength. Oliver is such a good boy! Complete an adoption survey for Oliver at https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/FKDS/Dog and schedule a time to come meet him!

Aspen is the Atlanta Humane Society pet this week!
Aspen is a 3-year-old Doberman Pinscher mix. This cutie is a gentle giant with a heart of gold, always eager to please his human companions. Toys are Aspen's passion, especially his beloved pickle plush which he joyfully hides around the house. He's a master at solving treat-filled puzzles and has a playful streak that led him to even try catching a bumblebee once, albeit unsuccessfully! Aspen finds joy in leisurely leash walks and unwinding while watching his favorite shows or movies, preferably with a treat in his paw. At home, he bursts with energy, running and playing with his cherished toys. Food is another love of Aspen's, and he's highly motivated by treats, making him a quick study for learning tricks like sitting, staying, and being housebroken. He's currently working on leash manners and is eager to improve. Ideal for a household where he can be the sole pet, Aspen thrives with a family that enjoys a more relaxed pace of life and ideally has a fenced backyard for his explorations. Daily walks are a must for this affectionate boy who adores attention and isn't shy about nudging a hand for more pets or settling in for a petting session. Aspen is available for adoption from Atlanta Humane at 1551 Perry Boulevard.
