4 Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet!

If you have a senior pet, you know their love is like no other. Each year millions of senior pets are surrendered to shelters across the country and their whole world changes.

Here are some great reasons to consider welcoming a senior pet into your family:

-Often already trained – In many cases, senior pets have spent their former years in a home and can respond to basic commands and are more likely to be house-trained.
-Ready for love – Being surrendered is a traumatic experience for all pets, giving them an unrelenting appreciation for the person who saves them and shows them love.
-Behaviorally developed – With older animals, most have outgrown difficult behavioral stages and are well adjusted, making them fit right in at home.
-Save a life! Senior pets are at higher risk for euthanasia than younger pets and by adopting an older pet, you could be saving a life.

Halloween time is here! Are you prepared for the holiday hazards and keeping your pet safe? Here are some Halloween pet safety tips:

Candy - always keep candy out of your pet's reach as more than just chocolate can be toxic to your pet if ingested

Candles - candles are especially fitting décor for Halloween, but they also make our pets very curious. Always take extra caution and never leave pets unattended around or near open flames

Costumes – people in costumes can be intimidating to our pets as it makes it more difficult for them to read our body language. If you notice your pet getting uncomfortable or fearful, remove them from the situation and give them a break

We hope these tips are helpful in ensuring a safe, and very happy Halloween for you and your pets!

: Did you know that your house cat shares over 95% of the same DNA as Tigers? That’s right, your feline friend descends from a long line of hunters. Their strong DNA makeup is the reason most cats have innate hunting skills you may see with your outdoor cats, or around the house with your indoor tiny tigers.

A question we hear a lot is, what is Leptospirosis? Lepto is a term you may hear around our clinic and is a disease carried by wildlife such as squirrels, deer or possums. The bacteria that causes leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals and can survive in water or soil for weeks to months. People and animals can get infected through contact with contaminated urine, water or soil. As many pets frequent the outdoors, they can encounter this disease.

If you think your pet might be at risk for contracting Lepto, or you’d like to learn more, please give us a call. Common symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, severe weakness, depression, extreme muscle pain and more.

Have questions about Leptospirosis? Just ask!

Did you know that your pet can sense changes in your mood? By paying close attention your dog may have the ability to feel your mood changes and emotions by studying your facial expressions and all-around behavior. If you find you are both needing a boost, try a long walk or some outdoor activity with your dog, or some one- on- one play time with your cat to boost both of your spirits!

For animal pain awareness month, we are helping you detect signs that could indicate your pet is experiencing pain or discomfort. They can’t communicate that they are in pain, so it is up to us to try and understand what they are telling us through their body language and behaviors.

-Excessive grooming in one area: If you notice your pet licking and grooming a particular area in excess, this could be an indicator of pain, allergies, or other health problems.

-Struggling to stand after laying down: If your pet is slow to rise after sleeping or napping this could mean their joints are painful or stiff.

-Sensitive to the touch: If you are noticing your companion is avoiding being pet in specific areas, this could be an indicator that this spot is painful for them.

If you think your pet may be in pain, please contact us! We are here to help manage your pet’s pain and help prevent future health issues.

It’s Back to School! With the hustle and bustle this time of year it’s important to remember to keep our pet’s safe. Here are a few back to school safety tips for pet & child parents everywhere!

-Keep lunch boxes & back packs out of reach: We know training your pets and children is asking a lot – but it’s important to remember all the potential hazards your curious pet can get into.

-Ease separation anxiety: Summer can be the best time of year. If your pet isn’t the type to relish in a quiet household, combat any separation anxiety they may be having by carving out time for them in your day, with a snuggle or a nice long walk.

-Always monitor children & pets: If you are seeing more traffic during the school year, this can be overwhelming for a pet. If you notice your pet may be stressed by the unpredictability of children, advocate for them by removing them from the room and giving them a quiet zone to relax.

Keep kids and pets safe this busy school year and thank you for following our tips!

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month and we are sharing some tips to help you understand when your pet might be in pain. Here are some possible indicators that your pet is signaling that they are experiencing pain or discomfort:

-Lack of appetite: If you notice an abnormal decrease in appetite, this can mean that your pet is not feeling well and experiencing mouth pain. Just like with humans, a pet’s’ appetite is impacted when something is off, and they are not feeling well.

-Difficulty going up or down stairs: It’s important to pay attention to your pet’s hesitancy with activities such as going up or down stairs, jumping in and out of the car or onto the couch, as that could be indicators of pain.

-General lethargy: Just like humans, pets may become weak when they are sick and in pain. If you notice a decrease in activity, it’s important to consult us.

We are here to help detect and prevent your pet from pain and sickness. If you think your pet might be in pain or if you have any questions, give us a call or book your next appointment today!
