Summer is here!

Panting releases heat, but not as effectively as sweating unfortunately making our pets more sensitive to the heat than us because they do not sweat across most of their skin. Heat exhaustion occurs when the body’s temperature is too warm causing the body to be unable to regulate the temperature. This means that once your pet becomes hyperthermic, their temperature can continue to rise if there is no intervention which can lead to death.

Prevention: If your pet is outdoors, they should be able to cool off so they do not overheat. Make sure there is plenty of shade and they should always have water! It is best to bring them inside during peak hours, especially if you know your pet’s health is already compromised. Flat faced dogs are more susceptible to heat exhaustion.

Walk your dog in the morning or evening when it is not as hot. Exercising warms the body's internal temperature, so it is best to avoid doing so in the hotter hours. Take water with you so your pet can hydrate and cool off. Check the walking surface to make sure it is not warm because the surface can radiate heat back towards your pet. Never leave your pet inside a parked car with the windows down or even with windows up and AC on. When your car is on, but parked this is known as idling. When your car is idling the AC will not work as well as it should because there is reduced air flow. The temperatures inside a parked car can reach over 100 degrees!

Never leave your pet inside your house with no AC. Just like your car your house can also reach very high temperatures if the AC is off even if it is just for a short period of time.

Symptoms:
- Hyperventilation
- Excessive panting
- Dry and hot nose can indicate a fever.
- Tacky drool (sticky and thick)
- Changes to your pet’s gum color
- Lethargy or unable to walk straight
- Vomiting or diarrhea

Intervention: Bring your pet into a cooler environment right away and check their temperature if you have a pet safe thermometer. A temperature of above 103 F is likely due to heat exhaustion.

Hose down with room temp water to slowly cool them down. Focus on their ears and paws. Cold water will change their temperature too quickly which can cause more damage.

This is considered a veterinary emergency as your pet can die if heat exhaustion is not treated right away! If your pet seems to be getting better it is still recommended to call for potential monitoring.

Rattlesnake season is upon us!

There are different rattlesnake species, each with different types of toxins that cause different reactions. Their venom in general causes both localized tissue damage as well as systemic changes that may not be seen for days.

These effects can, in some cases, result in the death of your pet. Rattlesnakes are most active from April to October because they are ectotherms meaning their body relies on the environment to regulate their temperature. Their habitat consist of heavy shrubs, parks, rural areas, suburban areas, and woodpiles.

Prevention: The annual Rattlesnake Vaccine helps your pet’s immune system to build antibodies that fight the venom and therefore lessen the severity of the reaction. If this is your pet’s first time being vaccinated, their rattlesnake vaccine will need a booster in 4-6 weeks to improve immunity response. Keeping your home free of brush will keep the rattlesnakes away.

Symptoms: You may see 2 puncture wounds along with bruising, swelling, and oozing at the site indicating your pet has been bit. Other symptoms include facial swelling and paralysis.

Treatment: A rattlesnake bite is a life threatening emergency even if your pet is vaccinated! Seek veterinary attention right away. Depending on the type of venom, the longer your pet goes without intervention the lower the chance of survival.

If you feel your pet may benefit from a Rattlesnake Vaccine please call our office!

Treating Diabetes Mellitus-
The amount of time it will take to reach ideal glucose levels will vary from patient to patient. The first few months of treatment are the most costly and tedious as the insulin dosing may need to be adjusted multiple times. Each time the dosing is adjusted, we will have to recheck the blood glucose with spot tests and see how it has changed. These rechecks are done 4-6 hours after the morning dose as that is the time frame for insulin to reach its peak effectiveness.

Once the patient shows an appropriate response to insulin (blood glucose level is much lower and symptoms are controlled), we can finally schedule a glucose curve so we can monitor your pet’s blood sugar levels throughout the entire day to find even more specific dosing.

At this point, we won’t need to see your pet weekly, but it will still be important to schedule follow-ups as doctor orders. Check out our other post about Diabetes Mellitus for more info!

About Diabetes Mellitus-
It is difficult to pin-point the exact cause of diabetes as genetics, obesity, diet, and pre-existing conditions can all be a reason. Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that results in high blood glucose levels because the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin.

Insulin is a hormone that the body uses to convert glucose into energy. If there is not enough insulin to do this task, the glucose will remain in the bloodstream and lead to elevated glucose levels, thus resulting in Diabetes Mellitus.

Insulin therapy will be lifelong to maintain adequate levels of glucose in the blood and to control the symptoms of diabetes such as excess thirst and weight loss.

The 4th of July is a high stimulation time for dogs. While we may enjoy the booms of the fireworks and the beautiful light displays, our furry friends often do not. The loud noises and flashing lights can cause fear and panic in pets.

- Help your pet stay calm: Antianxiety medication may help decrease your pet’s responses to the excessive stimulation. If you think medication may help your pet, please call us now at (209) 358-6000. Your pet needs a current exam, and we need time to fulfill all requests before the 4th.

Microchip and register your pet: Many pets tend to run away during this time. Microchipping increases the chances of your pet being returned home safely.

Have a safe and fun 4th of July!

Note: We will be closed on July 4th.
