We get our hay from Branex Hay each month! This is a great explanation of how to read hay testings.

Wondering how to read a hay test? 🧐 We’ve got you covered! ⤵️

As Sampled vs. Dry Matter:
As Sampled: Reports nutrients in the natural state (w/ moisture)
Dry Matter: Reports nutrients with moisture removed

Moisture: Moisture is the water content of the hay. Ideally around 10-15%; less than 10% may be on the drier side & contain less nutrients; higher then 17% risks molding.

Protein (Crude Protein): (For adult horses) ideally between 10-12%; for horses that are high-intensity, younger, or broodmares a higher CP is needed.
CP can range from 8 to 14% in grass hays - 14 to 17% in mixed hays - 15 to >20% in legume hay such as alfalfa.

Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF): ADF shows the cellulose and ligin; aka measures how digestible the hay is. Most ADF values should be between 30-45%. Lower the ADF is, the more digestible the nutrients of the hay are.

Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF):  NDF shows cellulose, hemicellulose, and ligin. The higher the NDF levels more then likely the less the horse will eat. Between 40-65% is generally the ideal ranges.

Non Structural Carbs (NSC)(WSC + Starch): NSC is the result of the analysis between the starches and sugars. To find out the NSC of the hay, it is
WSC + Starch = NSC
Typically, in order for a hay to be considered low NSC, it must have less then 12%.

Nitrates: Nitrates are a normal plant protein that is absorbed from the soil. High levels of nitrates can pose certain risks toward animals. Typically, it is ideal for hay to be under 1,000ppm.

DE: Digestible Energy is a calculation that take all aspects of nutrients into consideration and is used to balance the energy portion of a diet. Most hay will range 0.76Mcal- 1.1Mcal. However, horses is different working classes will require different measurements of DE.
🚨Remember every hay is different based off where it’s grown or how/when it’s harvested, etc.…which is why it is important to test and check!

We have tests available upon request for most of our hay offerings. Stop by and let us help you feed your furry friends right!

**Available for ADOPTION!!**

Poppy

Care Fur Life Horse Rescue is proudly offering Poppy for adoption. Poppy was rescued as a yearling (Oct 21) and during her time at CFL, has mastered all her basic ground manners/ life skills. Poppy has been in full time training to get started under saddle since September 2024.

From her trainer: “Poppy has been a joy to have in the barn. She’s adapted well to the busier atmosphere of the training program and really seems to thrive on a consistent routine. She’s sensitive and always trying to anticipate what you will want next. She’s quick and light on her feet with smooth, ground covering strides; we could see Poppy thriving in working equitation, ranch riding, trails, or jumping- she loves poles and jumps!

Our time together has been focused on helping Poppy to control her enthusiasm- finding balance and cadence in all 3 gaits, teaching her to move correctly through the basic showmanship maneuvers, and using obstacles to teach her to think through situations instead of rushing past things that are scary. She catches on quickly and retains ideas well from session to session.”

As of 12/12/24 Poppy has had a handful of rides and gains confidence every time.

Due to her young age and level of reactivity- Poppy is best suited to an adult or older teen with supervision of a professional. While she is not aggressive or mean, she has is quick with (and on) her feet and can be reactive. We have worked on this during her time here, and she has shown major improvement. With continued reinforcement and exposure, we believe this behavior will fade away.

We will be selective with who we choose for Poppy. We feel she would do best with a job, so we are looking for someone who is seeking and athletic and willing partner, who has experience with young and/or green horses. Strong preference will be given to someone already in a program with a professional.

We will require a site visit, as well as adoption contract and fee. If you think you could possibly be a great fit for her, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Poppy update!

Poppy got to come back to CFL for a quick farrier appointment, then back to the Pacific Northwest Equestrian Center to get back to training. Poppy is proving to be a reliable and sensible traveling partner.

Poppy also got to trade in her surcingle and training hula hoops for a western saddle, as she is now ground driving and prepping to ride!

Stay posted for content of Poppy’s first ride, but I’ll give you a hint.. she did great!

We had our annual Halloween party at the barn this week! We had a wonderful potluck with the CFL volunteers, decorated cookies, and all the horses got their turn bobbing for apples.

Beau and Atlas enjoyed the challenge, Serenity was curios and appreciated being hand fed an apple after her turn, and everyone else got an A for effort.

Check out our instagram for more videos of the horses bobbing for apples!

CFL Poppy continues to impress us all! Poppy is in full time training and is thriving during her time at the .equestrian.center.

She’s gaining tons of new life experiences and can’t wait to find her forever home. Poppy was confident and calm on the trailer ride to the PNWEC and took to her new schedule with stride.

She is loving all the opportunities to learn and is growing up so fast! We can’t thank Laura and the .equestrian.center enough for supporting Poppy and CFL.

Stay tuned for more Poppy updates and adoption opportunities.

Another great week at the barn! We got our new arena footing and hay from . We are so excited for our horses to have a soft arena and barn full of hay for this winter. We can’t thank the Branex team enough for all they do for us.

We also got our October grain delivery, more gravel added to our paddocks, and a few more horses bathed before the end of the day.

We love seeing our community pull together to support our rescue!

Some of our flower and veggie beds, all amended with compost made from our own p**p pile! We cannot wait to watch theme transform this spring and summer.

We still have some compost left! It is turned roughly weekly. Swing on by! We have empty grain bags available to be filled, or can load up truck beds by appointment.

We are just now getting to posting about last month's Volunteer Night. Instead of our usual format, we invited our volunteers to join us in listening to a presentation on equine nutrition put on by Branex Hay in Enumclaw. It was a wonderful sunny evening with lots of learning!

We are located in a neighborhood, and love that we can introduce people to horses who might not otherwise get the chance. However, sometimes we have to ask well meaning people not to feed our horses. If you are any of our neighbors, this is why we have such a strict no feed policy!
