Information about bird flu.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

🚨 Beware of Pet Scam Alert 🚨
We want to make our community aware of a scam targeting pet owners:
⚠️ Important Information:
- CARE Humane Society will NEVER ask for a down payment for any medical treatment.
- We do not have a veterinarian on-site, so we are not authorized to offer or charge for medical services.
⚠️ Scam Details:
- Scammers have been mimicking phone numbers, including ours or local vet clinics, to appear legitimate.
- They may target lost and found pet posts, using this as leverage to pressure owners into sending money.
- Some scammers have been reported to call from blocked or spoofed numbers and claim they have your pet, demanding payment before returning them.
🚫 What You Can Do:
- Always verify the identity of the caller and the location of your pet before making any payments.
- Ensure you see your pet in person and confirm their safety before conducting any transaction.
- If you suspect a scam, report it to local authorities or animal services immediately.
Your pet's safety is our top priority, and we are here to support you. Stay vigilant and spread the word to protect others!
