🌱🎃 Planting Pumpkins at Dovelee Farm! 🎃🌱

Yes, I said it - Pumpkins! Today, we took a unique approach to planting pumpkins by using trellises! We planted two special types of pumpkins: Winter Luxury Pie and Rouge Vif d'Etampes, also known as the "Cinderella pumpkin," a cherished old French heirloom. But that's not all - we also planted some lovely companion plants alongside them - sunflowers and borage. All from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company

🐓 We love to have our girls around, if you zoom in, you can see our girls under the trees.

Here are 3 benefits of trellising pumpkins:
1️⃣ Space-saving: By growing pumpkins on trellises, we can make the most of our limited space and allow the pumpkins to grow vertically, saving space for other crops.

2️⃣ Better air circulation: Trellising helps improve air circulation around the plants, reducing the risk of diseases such as powdery mildew.

3️⃣ Easier harvesting: With pumpkins growing off the ground, they are less prone to rotting and are easier to spot and harvest when the time comes.

One of the reasons we don’t keep the front grass too short or a non native only grass. The blossoms are one of the first foods for our bees and we get the occasional bunny in the yard :)

🌸 June 🌸 the seeds we planted in March are producing fruit and our tomatoes are starting to ripen. It’s also a great time to succession plant with Georgia’s long growing season. Today we planted a variety of beans (pinto, snake, kidney, green), & rainbow carrots. We also seeded some black beauty zucchini & crookneck squash.

We harvested our garlic and we still have a lot to learn.

The okra and corn we planted a couple of weeks ago are growing well. 🌽

🔥🌿 Our backyard transformation is almost complete! 🌼✨ After 2 weekends of hard work, we've turned a simple idea into a cozy fire pit and seating area that is now buzzing with life 🐝🦋 We've carefully selected plants like lavender and coreopsis to attract bees and butterflies, creating a beautiful and vibrant atmosphere. 🌺🌿 Shoutout to Pam at Grass Roots Garden Center in Graniteville for her expert guidance in choosing the perfect plants for our new sanctuary! 🔥🌸 🌻🌳

Sweet potato slips are in the ground - today we focused on gently tilling this area, adding in compost and planting 36 sweet potato slips.

Sweet potatoes enjoy warm weather and grow throughout the summer. We’ll harvest these in about 85-120 days.

Tip: when planting, use a tape measure to properly space your seedlings. Our rows are 3ft across and slips are planted every 10 inches.

March 8th the Meliaferra Honey Syndicate gets out of lock up. So we are prepping the Compound for their return. We came across Louie aka “the rat” who sent the family to the man made cells. Maybe he was left in perfect condition even after death as a reminder.
After March 8th it will be time to sniff out any collaborators.
