Can anyone help sweet Sophia?

Still available .
Please share Sophia. No cats please in home.

We always hope that we outlive our dogs. As heartbreaking as it is to lose our beloved dogs even worse is knowing that we are dying, and our best friend will have no place to go.

We get a lot of sad emails at SDR, but this gutted us: "Of special note, Sophia was a most gentle and loving companion to my husband who required a walker or wheelchair. She accompanied him, walking beside him in his electric wheelchair, on daily walks on the sidewalks and trail near our home."

We get asked to help at least 25 dogs a week, and rarely nowadays can we help even one. Sophia's story caught our heart. She sat beside her human in his wheelchair until the day he passed. Gentle and sensitive she was his best companion, during the hardest of days.

When he passed away, Sophia mourned alongside Katherine. They picked up the pieces and tried to continue with life... but now Katherine's health is failing and she cannot care for Sophia anymore.

Sophia's bio is below. She is a sensitive girl... but sounds like an absolute lovely companion for the right home.

We are courtesy posting her - which means you'd be adopting straight from her person, Katherine... if you are the right fit for Sophia.

Time is of the essence, and sadly, with no family members who will take her in - Katherine is bereft, as there are no good options if a home isn't found.

Here is what Katherine wrote up about Sophia:

"Sophia is a gentle, sensitive, beautiful 7-year-old mixed breed dog, weighing 78 pounds and has been spayed. She is very affectionate with those she is attached to and with those she feels comfortable with. While she is generally shy with strangers and does better with women than with men, Sophia warms quickly to people who have a gentle, easy-going, approachable demeanor, obviously loves dogs and know to wait for her to decide they are ok.

Sophia has been accustomed to having my husband (prior to his passing) or myself at home with her most of the time and to being taken with me whenever possible. She does well when left alone in the house for several hours on occasion but gets anxious if left alone consistently and is frightened by loud noises such as thunderstorms and fireworks.

When I leave the house, I generally leave calming music on and always say the same thing to her "I love you puppy, be good girl." On occasions where I would be gone overnight or multiple days, she either stayed with family or I hired a house/dog sitter to stay in my home with her. When there is a thunderstorm or fireworks, she generally hides in the bathroom or downstairs.

Sophia loves her yard - especially in good weather - but spends most of her time in the house, which is where she is most comfortable when home alone. She learns quickly, responds readily to affection and invitations to go for a ride, for a walk or to cuddle with me on the couch. She is a sensitive girl and requires only a look, hand signal or spoken word, if needed, to correct her behavior.

She barks only if she sees someone approaching our front yard or hears someone at the door or when she wants in from outside. She does not bark at passersby or other dogs when out in the back yard, even when the neighbor dogs are barking. She primarily uses body language to let me know she needs to go outside, it's time for food, she needs water, or is she just wants to play or cuddle, but also 'talks' to me at times, not by barking but in her gentle playful way.

She sleeps in her own bed on the floor in my bedroom and knows that she is only allowed on the sofa if her blanket is there for her to lay on.

Of special note, Sophia was a most gentle and loving companion to my husband who required a walker or wheelchair. She accompanied him, walking beside him in his electric wheelchair, on daily walks on the sidewalks and trail near our home. For safety of my husband and young granddaughter, she was taught to wait to go up or down stairs until people have completed their way up or down stairs and needs only a gentle reminder of "Wait" should anything distract her from doing so.

Some of the cues Sophia knows: Treat, Food, Supper, Breakfast, Walk, Go for a Ride, Go to Bed, Off, Up (invitation to get up on the couch), Wait, Stay, Ok (release from Wait or Stay), Come, Belly rub, Brush the Puppy, Stand, Sit, Lay Down, and Turn Around though that one only seems to work when I am brushing or bathing her. She knows each of the family members by name and will seek them out if I tell her to go find "name". "

If you think you can offer Sophia a great home, with a yard ideally... please reach out to us and we will connect you with Katherine.

And please share this post... Sophia is urgent.

About the trainer

Since 2010, Laura McGaughey, CPDT-KA, ABCDT has been a dog handling professional on the dog trainer path. Her start was as a shelter volunteer as a dog walker, then dog trainer, developing and running classes to help dogs become more adoptable, and shelter volunteers to keep safe while coaching them to work with dogs' behavior and training. To this end, she put together a team of trainers to run a variety of classes free of charge.

In 2012, she launched a successful company, Delightful Doggies, that first offered dog walking and pet sitting, and then grew into a dog training business. Clients came to Laura for her expertise on reactivity, "hyperactive" dogs, "naughty" adolescents, puppy and new dog obedience training, fear, aggression, anxiety and nose work.

In 2017, she was invited to work at a national-level service dog organization. Leaving her business behind, she opted to learn and grow in a new career path. While it was very fulfilling, Laura felt called to start a new business with even more amazing offerings to clients.

Born in Louisville, KY and raised in Mount Eden, KY, Laura moved to Denver, CO in 1996 and returned to the Bluegrass State in April, 2020 to help care for her mother and launch Way Cool Canines. Laura currently resides in Shelbyville, KY with her mother and her two dogs, Jasper the fluffy butt shelter mutt and Hidalgo, a Chihuahua.
