🚶♂️ Say Goodbye to Pulling! Tips for Loose Leash Walking with Your Dog 🚶♀️
Struggling with your dog pulling on the leash during walks? Here's how to teach them to walk calmly by your side:
Start with the Right Gear
Use a well-fitted harness or collar that gives you control without causing discomfort to your dog. A 4-6 foot leash works best for training.
Set the Pace
Begin your walk at a slow, steady pace. If your dog starts to pull, stop walking immediately. Wait for them to relax the tension on the leash, then continue.
Use Rewards Wisely
Reward your dog when they walk calmly beside you with treats, praise, or their favorite toy. This reinforces good behavior and makes the walk enjoyable for both of you.
Change Directions
If your dog starts to pull, change direction or make a U-turn. This keeps them focused on you and not on pulling ahead.
Be Consistent
Consistency is key! Practice loose leash walking daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Over time, your dog will learn that staying close to you is the best way to enjoy their walk.
Pro Tip: Patience and practice are essential. It might take some time, but with persistence, your dog will be walking like a pro! 🐾

🐶✨ Teaching Eye Contact with Distractions: A Game-Changer for Your Puppy! 🐾
Hey friends! I just had to share this adorable video of my puppy mastering eye contact, even with a treat as a distraction. 🥰👀
Eye contact is such an essential skill for our furry friends—it strengthens our bond, improves communication, and helps with training. Here are a few tips to get started:
Start Small: Begin in a quiet environment with minimal distractions.
Reward Focus: When your pup looks at you, immediately reward them with a treat and lots of praise. Consistency is key!
Gradually Increase Distractions: Once they get the hang of it, introduce small distractions, like another person or a toy.
Practice Makes Perfect: Keep sessions short and fun. The more you practice, the better your puppy will get at maintaining eye contact, no matter what's going on around them.
Check out this video of Rise nailing eye contact despite the tempting treat in my hand! 🐾👇

1️⃣ Start by rewarding your dog for staying still.
2️⃣ Toss a treat a short distance away. When your dog returns and stops moving, mark the behavior with “yes” or a clicker and reward.
3️⃣ Gradually increase the time your dog remains still before marking the behavior. Increase the duration by fractions of seconds.
From here you have your foundations for a solid stay behavior, plus a dog with the ability to stay calm and composed in various situations 🎉
Is your dog eager to please, but struggles to stay still? Is your dog constantly throwing out all the tricks they know instead of actually listening to what you’re communicating?

Just like people, dogs can suffer from overheating. When letting your dog play, or when trialing or traveling with your dog, always be on the lookout for signs that your dog is overheating.
If you suspect your dog may be suffering from a heat-related illness, cool them down and bring them to the nearest veterinary clinic.
Reinforcement Cues to Reinforce Stays -

Last week we shared some information about JUMPING, and we wanted to continue this week by sharing the best way to prevent jumping: rewarding sit! Our Manners students learn how to stop jumping and get a reliable sit from their dog in our group class.
Basic Manners starts tomorrow and we still have a few spots left! If you want to really enjoy your dog this summer, take the steps to have a better-behaved dog that you can take anywhere! Our next class won't start for nearly two months, so don't delay! Sign up your dog today!
This is Lexi, my 13 year old daughter and her dog Strive. I am Lexi's mom, but I'm also her Rally coach. Lexi started working with Strive about 2 years ago. Strive had all the rally basics, but we all know it's more about the handler than the dog in rally! Her first trial, Lexi got an IP for moving her feet too much on the pivot. Since that first trial, she has gotten High Triple and High Combined 7 times, beating out all of the adults! Lexi has worked hard to learn the signs, recognize the common mistakes that handlers make in rally, and improve her handling and connection with her dog. Now, they are 3 QQQ's and a few points away from earning a RACH. They are also state 4-H Grand Champions in Excellent Rally the last two years. One thing that I've taught Lexi is that the majority of rally points are lost because of the handler, not the dog. If you know what those common mistakes are, it's much easier to avoid making them! This Master run was a couple of weeks ago. Strive and Lexi went on to earn both High Triple and High Combined that day. Lexi's hard work is paying off with each trial they attend. In fact, this was the weekend that they earned HT and HC all three days of the weekend! (Yes, that means that Lexi and Strive beat me and Excel, but not by much!!) I created a class so I could bring this information to you. Certain errors in rally are made over and over, and if you know this, it's easy to avoid them! For instance, did you know that on the Call Front Finish Foward signs, you have to step out *before* the dog gets back to heel position after the finish? I just saw someone get an IP (incorrect performance) on this sign, losing 10 points. Do you want to see how it is supposed to look? Check out the video at about :20 second! My online class, From Good to GREAT: Increasing Your Rally Scores starts on June 1st at Fenzi Dog Sports Academy, and registration is open now! This my favorite rally class to teach, because there's so much good in

One skill I teach my puppies young is to observe other dogs doing fun things while staying calm. This isn't easy for a young pup, so I use plenty of reducing arousal and rewards to help the pup be successful. Here, Rise is learning how to calmly watch dogs running agility. In Basic Manners, your dog will learn how to act around other dogs without getting all crazy and excited. Classes start SOON, so sign up today! goldenpawsdogtraining.com
Teaching your dog to stand can be useful for all sorts of things, like grooming, putting on a harness, or wiping their paws. Here are two different ways that you can teach your dog how to stand!
Here's a fun little game to teach your dogs! You can use a cone like I have, or anything other object the dog can circle: a tree, garbage can, or whatever else you have lying around! You can jump-start the behavior by luring the dog around a couple of times, but quickly fade the lure and start rewarding any effort the dog puts forth to go toward and circle the cone! Show me a video in the comments of you teaching your dog this behavior that I call fly!
Exciting news! 🐾 Today is the FIRST day of classes at FDSA! I can't wait to meet all the adorable dogs in the Get Ready to Rally: Foundations and Freedom From FOMO courses! In this video, Rise is learning how to down on a verbal cue. To teach your dog a verbal cue, say the word down, pause, then help the dog with your hand if needed. If your dog even thinks about laying down, reward them! In this session, I am using "ground" as a reward marker. "Ground" means to the dog that the treat will be placed on the floor. Expecting the treat on the floor encourages the dog to stay down and close to the floor. Down on both a hand signal and verbal cue is one of the many behaviors that we teach in the manners classes at Golden Paws! Check out our website for more information about our classes!
New puppy?? Join our awesome puppy classes at Golden Paws Dog Training! You'll learn how to properly socialize your pup (no, playing with the neighbor's dog is NOT sufficient socialization). The puppy package comes with a training packet, a welcome bag, a clicker, and a puppy Kong! Class is open enrollment so you can start anytime! The only requirement is that your puppy has it's first booster shot. The socialization period runs from 3 weeks to 16 weeks, so get your pup in as soon as you can!
