Soooo I had the best “ride-a-long partner” yesterday when I went to trim this sweet donkey’s hooves! My youngest son, Nate, loves donkeys more than anyone else I know. This is a short video clip of the trim. Enjoy!!!

It has been said that a farrier should be a horseman first and a horseshoer second.

To understand hoof balance, we must first understand horses. Their gaits, their anatomy, their specific tack for various disciplines, and how to affect the horse through a trim and shoeing to give the desired effect.

In the art of farriery, sound principles have changed very little over the centuries. One of the fundamentals that remains constant is the desire to first do no harm to the horse.

I personally find the horse to be majestic and magnificent. It has carried and served man for thousands of years. Only in the last 100 years has the horse been replaced as the principle means of land transportation, but many of us still look to our beloved equine friends for recreation and relaxation.

It has also been said that if you sit with a horse quietly, it will show you its heart. Sit with a horse kindly, it will show you yours!

There's one question that I get asked more than any other... "Does my horse need shoes?"

It is a valid question and not really difficult to answer and yet at the same time it gets a little complicated. Let me explain - It all really depends on each specific horse and what activities it will be engaged in. Here is a great example of a horse that has been enjoying life on easy street just eating grass and getting groomed. He's a healthy 3 year old with pretty good conformation and he does NOT wear out his feet faster than they grow so he doesn't NEED shoes. Therefore he gets a light trim with a "mustang roll" to keep his hooves balanced with his limbs. However, he's about to learn what a saddle is and his circumstances will change. If you're wondering about your horse's needs, please contact me and I will be happy to discuss it further with you. Thanks for checking out my post and until next time, Happy Trials!

My goal is to serve you and your equine partner to the best of my abilities. I strive to see and evaluate the whole horse before I start trimming. After all... it is called horse shoeing , not hoof shoeing. Studies have proven that trimming and shoeing for balance and conformation reduces the stress of joints, ligaments, and tendons. The end result is a more comfortable, capable, and cooperative partner for you to enjoy for as long as possible.
If you are interested in how I can help your horse to be at its best, please call me or text me to discuss your options. Thank you!
