Duke’s first “heel” lesson was awesome! He’s a 5 month old Goldendoodle and expected to be about 90-100lbs full grown!
Heeling in the neighborhood off e-collar & off leash.
Our ultimate goal with training is to build the best possible conditioned response to our commands & offered behaviors. This strengthens your relationship with your dog!
Do we still use our e-collar in highly distracting type environments or hikes? Yes, just in case something is far too exciting. But only because those moments are far more rare. How many times to you walk in the neighborhood vs. go on a hike? Maybe 20 to 1? 50 to 1? Then what makes your dog think that rules on a hike matter just as much as a neighborhood walk?
When you feel they listen as well on e-collar as they do off, then you’ve built a reliable conditioned response 😊 regular/formal training and practice should still occur on the e-collar even after you build a conditioned response, but especially if you’ve seen the command has been gotten weaker after several months or years.
When that time comes, go out to the front yard or a quiet park, get back to the basic exercises we taught you and your dog will snap right into shape just after a couple of days of exercise-specific practice. (This is also why it’s important to get a trainer that teaches YOU how to train your dog, like DTE 😃)
During your training with us: the more consistent you are at pairing your baseline stimulus on your e-collar to your command, the better and longer lasting your conditioned response will be.
And if needed - call us with questions!
Today a client stated their dog won’t come off of place when they say “break”. Have y’all ever experienced that? We have! So we sent them a visual aid. You should be on-leash and use the leash and your reward (praise, you, or treat) as a way to let them know “break” is a safe word to come off. Our dogs should wait until they hear the word “break” to come off and not anticipate based on our leash or body language.
Few side notes:
We want to strive for repetition & first try compliance on-leash and that will lead us to off-leash compliance.
Use the proper reward system for your dog and don’t confuse work ethic & high drive. Example: Duke is more distracted by the presence of training treats & toys because he’s conditioned to have a high drive when they’re around (tricks for treats in our home usually means go bonkers, speak, spin, and roll over, etc.) We rarely reward his conditioned e-collar commands with a treat and when I take him to public places I never have a treat pouch with me. His proper reward and motivation for work or training is pets and praise because his work ethic comes from wanting to please. His high drive comes from play and treat training and isn’t what motivates him. We do give him a treat after working for a few minutes or a few hours, but not during. Penny and Daisy are the exact opposite - *holds sign* WILL WORK FOR FOOD
Notice how little words we’re saying and our tone of voice is positive. Simplifying your command and reward is a great step to more effective communication with your dog. Also, no need for “stay” or “wait” 😃
Good sit, Shadow! We have worked a lot on impulse control and holding commands in different areas. It certainly looks like it has paid off for her family! #bernadoodle #dogtraining #austindogs

Yes! We love this! Training with distractions is an important part of obedience. Sully’s family has been so intentional with their desensitization work to help him be calm and confident in many circumstances. The sweater and his eye contact are 💯on point!
