Hey there, fellow dog lovers! Let me share something important with you. You know, when we spoil our furry friends with too much love and pampering, they start to think of us as their personal treat dispensers! The more we indulge them, the harder it becomes for us to be seen as their leaders. Simply put, the more memories we create together, the stronger their image of us is, and it gets pretty tricky to change that later on. So let's strive for balance and remember that being a good pack leader is the key to a well-behaved pup! 🐶💕

You know, dogs are such curious creatures! They're always on the lookout for things they like and trying to stay away from the stuff they don't. But, when we don't set boundaries and let them do whatever they want, it's like rolling out the red carpet for all sorts of naughty behavior. We might even see our furry friends get more and more aggressive.

The thing is, sometimes we smother them with love and kindness, and it gets in the way of setting clear rules. Without knowing what's okay and what's not, our dogs might start pushing their luck and getting into trouble. And eventually, that can turn into something dangerous.

Here's the deal: when we shower them with love but don't provide any structure, our dogs start seeing us as just someone to play with. But we really need a balance of both.

If we don't maintain that balance, respect goes out the window, and our dogs will take any chance they can to make life easier for themselves. And what happens next? They start making their own rules and pushing the boundaries even further. It's not a pretty sight, trust me.

So it's on us, the humans, to guide, direct, and set limits for our dogs. We need to bring order, control, and structure to our relationship with them. If we let them run the show, it's only going to lead to more trouble down the road.

Let's work together to make sure we're raising happy, well-behaved pups!

Meet Anne & Tracer. Anne came to me looking for a personal protection dog. She has several properties and has had some close calls with aggressive trespassers. After consulting with her, I learned that she had some very special requirements needed for her new life long friend.

1. The dog has to be ok with livestock. 100's of cattle, goats, horses, chickens roaming free, and, of course, 9 other dogs!
2. The dog would Not be kept in a kennel, but rather live in the home with her other dogs.
3. The dog would have to be very social as it would accompany her everywhere.
4. The dog would have to have a calm relaxed demeanor when not working.

Meet TRACER! Her new forever best friend. Tracer is a working-line German Shepherd who is exactly the type of dog she wanted. Confident, strong, loyal, calm, and with a great temperament, Tracer is everything she wanted in a PPD. I am so looking forward to following this exciting partnership! Congratulations Anne! You have 1 special dog!

Personal protection dogs are a specialized type of dog. They are not police dogs. Rather, they are trained to stay with the person they are protecting, instead of chasing after a “bad guy” like a police dog would. Protection dogs are also loving family pets who would give their life to protect their family.

If you have an interest in a PPD (personal protection dog) or would like your dog evaluated for possible protection training please reach out to me and let me help.

Gotta let a dog just be a dog sometimes. Yes, training and obedience require effort and teamwork and are extremely pleasurable for both when done correctly, but sometimes you just need to have fun with your best buddy and let them do "doggy things".

Truth. Many dog's behavioral problems can be cured by simple pet management on part of the owner. Dogs require a certain amount of structure. When it's lacking and permissiveness runs wild, things can go wrong. Learn to be the type of leader that you dog needs. It'll help in your overall relationship with your dog and provide more comfort and confidence for you and them.

It's easy for your dog to do a "down" in a sterile environment like your home or backyard with no "distractions". Gradually ramp up your distractions and reward duration when positions are held. Soon you'll have bulletproof obedience. Keep training!

It's all about attention. If you don't have it obviously your dog is "focused" on something else. If you have his attention true ENGAGEMENT" can begin. Here we are doing very basic luring and just getting the dog to look at me (attention heel). Click and reward.
Have fun and ENGAGE!

It’s so easy for trainers and dog owners alike to get focused on teaching their dogs household rules and obedience and skip the fundamentals that create lasting, training results. One of the very first things we must teach a dog is simply to pay attention to us humans! This is the process of ENGAGEMENT training.

A dog who is ENGAGED knows that payments (praise, treats, toys, and fun) come from their handler and is motivated to work with their human. Before we can ask a dog to follow commands, have good manners, or be safe off leash, we must show them that listening to us is in their best interest.
