Today, we received a generous donation from the —three carloads full of blankets, bedding, bowls, collars, leashes, and more! These supplies will go a long way in keeping our shelter pets comfortable while they wait for their forever homes.

We’re so grateful for Austin Kennel Club’s support and commitment to animal welfare in our community. 💛

2-year-old Martin (A921312) arrived at AAC as a stray with a zip-tied collar so tight it was digging into his neck and had to be cut off. You can see the marks on his neck in the photos!

Despite this rough start, he’s still a snuggly, affectionate pup who just wants to curl up in your lap.

Small dogs like Martin don’t usually wait long for homes, but he has been here for nearly a month with no luck.

Let’s change that! Come meet him any day from 11 AM - 7 PM.

As Austin’s municipal shelter, we often work with local law enforcement on cases involving cruelty, overwhelmed caregivers, and more—leading to sudden changes in our capacity. Keep an eye on our updated capacity meters to stay informed about our intake status: http://www.austintexas.gov/page/shelter-capacity.

Cats: 50 open spaces
Small dogs: 8 spaces
Medium/large dogs: -14 spaces (over capacity)

If you are looking to make the biggest impact, consider fostering or adopting a medium/large dog. Especially one from the urgent placement list: https://www.austintexas.gov/page/urgent-placement

Thank you for your continued support!

Meet Desperate House Cat, Duchess (A917061) 👑

Don’t be fooled by her permanent airplane ears— this sweet girl just needs a little time to warm up before she starts asking for pets or brushing.

She came to us as a sick community cat who was not thriving outside. Thanks to our vet staff, she’s now fully recovered and ready for her forever family (and her glamourous inside life)!

Duchess is currently building her confidence in foster care and is learning that people aren’t so scary. She’d do well in a home with or without other cats and just needs a patient adopter to help her continue to blossom.

update - "I just wanted to reach out and give an update on Goose (formerly known as Snoot). I adopted him in April of 2023 and he truly has been the biggest blessing in my life!

He has been the best dog I could ever ask for and has been there for me through the best and the worst moments. He has become friends with my parents' two Vizslas and loves to go visit them and his favorite treat is salmon.

He is obsessed with anything soft to nibble on and his favorite toy is his stuffed penguin. He's a huge cuddler and truly loves everyone he meets.

I've always been a dog lover, but he has truly changed my life for the better in more ways than I can count; I even got his little nose spot tattooed to remind me of him!

I truly couldn't ask for a better best friend. Thank you for helping me make the best decision of my life!"

Thanks again for adopting and sharing your story!!

Our Animal Protection Officers responded to an unusual call on Friday—two big dogs trapped in a storm drain! 🐶🐶

When our APO arrived, they searched for a big enough entry point, but there was no way these dogs could have gotten in from any nearby openings.

With help from Austin Watershed, we checked a map and discovered the nearest open field was far away… meaning these two must have traveled deep through the drain system together before finally being spotted!

Thanks to quick teamwork, both dogs were safely rescued and are now in our care. A huge thank you to the good samaritan who called it in and to everyone who helped get them to safety!

Meet Linda (A909211). This funny, affectionate dog is full of personality and truly knows how to enjoy life!

At 2 years old, she’s the perfect mix of playful and laid-back. She loves zoomies, splashing in the kiddie pool, and even tackling the obstacle course (sometimes with dramatic jumps over the pool for extra flair).

But when playtime is over? She’s just as happy to veg out on the couch and soak up affection. Volunteers say she’s hilarious, easy to handle, and always ready to for some loving.

After 208 days in the shelter, Linda is ready for her forever home.

Come meet Linda any day from 11 AM - 7 PM—she’s ready to be your adventure buddy and your couch companion!

A huge thank you to KGSR for kicking off the Woofstock donation drive right here at AAC yesterday! As the first Woofstop, we loved seeing the community come together to support local shelters.

Every donation helps pets in need, and we’re so grateful to be part of this amazing event.

See you at Woofstock on Feb 27th! 🎸🐶

courtesy post - Nick, Schmidt, Coach, Jess, and Cece are 4-month-old siblings looking for forever homes in Austin!

Their mom, a sweet pitbull, had an unplanned litter of 11(!), and thanks to a kind neighbor, each puppy has already been spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and put on heartworm prevention. They’re social, playful, and ready to bring joy to their new homes!

Rehoming through Home To Home helps keep shelters out of shelters and allows pets to transition straight into loving homes. Interested? Contact their caregiver through the link!

- Meet Hami (A861888)!

This handsome guy is great mix of chill and playful! He loves playing fetch, solving puzzle toys, and going on hikes where he can sniff to his heart’s content. At home, he enjoys watching squirrels out the window and curling up for a good nap. He enjoys cuddles too, but they have to be on his terms!

Hami is house-trained and has been learning more every day, thanks to the training he's been doing with his foster mom. He could do well with another dog but would also be happy as your only pet.

If you’re looking for a playful, well-mannered pup, Hami is ready to meet you!

When Pumpkin (A910830), Kendrick (A910827), and Avocado (A910829) arrived at the shelter 180 days ago, they were completely different dogs.

They're all around 2 years old, and we suspect they had lived outside their whole lives, unsure of any human kindness. But with patience, care, and time; they began to trust people.

🎙️ Kendrick was too scared to walk in front of people at first. Now, he happily trots out for walks, wags at passing dogs, and even climbs into laps for pets.

🎃 Pumpkin went from avoiding touch to seeking out cuddles and zooming around the yard in pure joy. He loves his dog walker buddies and will curl up next to you on the couch.

🥑 Avocado was the most fearful but has made huge progress. He now greets familiar faces with a tail wag, lets trusted people pet him, and enjoys being near his best friend, Kendrick.

These three are on our urgent placement list and need fosters or adopters to continue their journey in a home, not a kennel. They’ve made incredible progress, and we can't wait to see how they blossom outside the shelter.

Come meet them any day from 11 AM - 7 PM!

update - "Jasper (formerly Sanders) joined our family in February 2023, and he’s been on quite the journey since! He’s explored five states, enjoyed endless hikes and beach trips, and shared plenty of cuddle time.

Despite his energy, his favorite things are cozying up on the couch and watching animals on TV. As an only child, he definitely makes the most of all the attention!"

Thanks again for adopting and sharing your story!!

Shelter life was particularly tough on her, but now that she’s in a foster home, she’s finally able to relax and show her sweet side.

Mitzi is a little shy but once she knows you, she loves pets, cuddles, and has plenty of playful energy to keep you entertained. She also seems just fine with other cats!

Our Animal Protection Officers recently picked up nine puppies who needed our help. Since most of them look alike, we had to break out our puppy markers 🖍️

These little ones are now safe in our care, and we’ll be working to get them into loving homes as soon as possible. Come to the shelter to meet them!

If you ever come across stray animals in need, call 311 to report it. Our APOs are here to help ensure animals get the care and safety they deserve.

update - "This is Sidney and we adopted her from AAC on October of 2013. She came in a litter of about 8 puppies and we fell absolutely in love with her when we saw her online.

We don't know her exact birthday so we decided it would be on July 29th since she was about 3 months old when we got her.

She has been the best for 11 years! We love her more than anything and she's one of the best decisions we have made.

She's so smart and funny and also loves everyone. She has made people change their mind about Pitbulls and how "dangerous" they are.

I will say her farts are deadly but that's the only dangerous thing about our Sidney lol

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to adopt her and be her family forever ❤️"

Thanks for adopting and sharing your story!

In Austin, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by so much incredible wildlife, but with that comes a responsibility to stay aware of the associated risks. We share our city with many critters that run a high risk of rabies.

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects mammals, including humans, and is spread through bites or scratches from an infected animal. But the good news? Rabies is 100% preventable.

Here’s how you can protect yourself, your pets, and our community:

🐕 Vaccinate Pets: Keeping your dogs and cats up-to-date on rabies vaccines is the best way to protect them—and you.

👀 Avoid Contact: Never approach or touch high-risk rabies species like bats, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks.

📞 Report Bites: If you’re bitten by any animal, seek medical attention immediately and report it to Austin Animal Center through 311.

Wildlife can be seen at all times of the day—just because you see them out, it doesn’t mean they’re sick. Urban wildlife has adapted to city life, so it’s normal to see them out and about!

If you encounter wildlife in need of help or want more information on rabies prevention, please contact us through 311.
