When you’ve got good roots, what more do you need?

I’ve been missing the community I grew up in. I had way more differences than similarities with a lot of the people, but the shared sense of mutual support and humanity was strong.

The world keeps cracking, the fissures get deeper, and I yearn for a time and place where we all agree on what’s most important.

Steady on, roots up. ❤️

I made a list of goals today.

I’ve written goals before, business goals, get to know myself goals, relationship goals, financial goals.

I sat down to name my goals because I’ve been feeling a bit aimless, like my pursuits aren’t quite hitting the spot.

That’s when I found a golden thread that’s been quietly idling in the background of my awareness. I named it.

I have Earth goals.

I want to know the birds. To stop when I hear them, take note of their calls, squint until I find them amongst the leaves.

I want to know the trees. To see their bark, their leaf patterns, to call them by name.

I want to know the rocks. How and where they were formed, and what minerals make up their spectacular colors and patterns.

I have Earth goals.

Last weekend I got to learn from friend and fellow gardener 🫶🏼

No matter how many years you’ve been growing food, there are always more experiments, new methods to try, and knowledge to share.

The most exciting opportunities are the ones where you get to dive into the details with your peers, and pull out the nuggets of wisdom that maybe you were overlooking. My takeaway from this class was to make worm casting tea!

I ran eighteen miles this morning, and saw this 18 on the last lap. I don’t know if I’ve ever been more committed to accomplishing something that seems impossible. 10 training weeks left to my first marathon and I’m finally starting to see how it’s possible to run 26 miles. I couldn’t do this without my best friend, partner, coach, and biggest supporter, I practically tackled at the end of my run today. 💗

I’m always on the hunt for places where I can slip out of modern life, and just exist as a tiny speck in the natural world. To sink into the earth, swallowed up by grasses and mosses and lichen and the richness of the soil and fungi, but maybe not so much the bugs.

I found this spot on the shores of Ireland a few weeks ago. The wind was blowing, strong and steady, with a chill that cut through fabric. But when I laid down against the ground, the howls faded and I found comfort in the stillness of being held by my planet.

It felt like a return.

Seeds are the best souvenir I can think of.

I love the camaraderie of growers everywhere, willing to share their favorite varieties, bits of seeds saved, or fertilizer tricks.

Our lovely guide Eion left these tomato seeds for me as a parting gift, with a note about their origin.

One is an heirloom beefsteak, collected the year prior in Greece. The other is a disease resistant cherry, grown yearly in Ireland. Both are open pollinated so I can grow and save the seeds myself.

I may have also pocketed some tomato seeds from lunch, which I spread on my napkin to dry 🤭

A very nourishing meal of chops, Carolina gold rice, and a succotash of sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, squash and herbs. Shared with family in the summer glow. 💛
