When we were dating, we pulled into a parking spot and Lovebug came on, and we sat in the car while the girls shouted the lyrics and you had this big smile on your face and we both teared up a little.

I think about that moment a lot when you smile at me. A smile that makes everyone feel loved and included, pretty much all you ever want in life.

I hope this year is your best so far, happy birthday lover. 🖤

Lucky to have access to farms and farm foods and chefs that make them taste amazing.

Reading Dirt by .buford and spending time again with farm friends and watching the new legands, I’m feeling inspired all over again by food.

On this plate, there is a coppa chop, carrots fresh from the ground today (thanks !) and a chimichurri of carrot tops and herbs from the yard.

It’s a complicated, emotion packed journey, to mother and be mothered.

Providing the framework for a great life, not too much support that they can’t stand alone, but enough that they feel safe to go on their own adventures. Strong, resilient, always knowing where they can find their sense of home, because they carry it with them.

And the joy. The pure, sunshine-y warmth of family. Thanks to the mothers.

To my own mother,
to all the mothers in my life,
to the daughters and sons,
whether they were born to us or we came to them through luck.

I am beyond grateful for the family we create together.

I know we’re not all this lucky, and I hope everyone finds at least a version of the love of a mother in their lives.

Gulf Coast fish makes its way to Austin restaurants, directly from the hands of the fisherman, into the single truck of Heritage Seafood, through the determination and relationships of Ben McBride.

It is not a small feat, but a responsibility Ben takes seriously.

The four-man team who caught this load spent three days on the water, after a 10-day hiatus due to weather. They pulled in 10,000 pounds of mostly American Red Snapper, with a few hundred pounds of Vermillion snapper by-catch, one Porgy, a handful of Yellowmouth Grouper, and one very sought after wild Cobia.

Seafood is a highly misunderstood industry, which creates opportunity for deception and sourcing sleight of hand. Just like with farming and ranching, it’s important to get to know the folks who handle your food. 🐠

Spent the day reading about French chefs, browsing cookbooks, and debating the qualities of a French baguette. Asked if he would make me a bright, spring fish for dinner. 10/10 would recommend 😏

Fava bean butter, braised spring onion and fennel, seared red snapper and scallop, fresh fava and herb salad 🌿

The Symposium was filled with local food system gold, and I know the attendees had even more to share!

So grateful for the opportunity to sit in contemplation with my peers and community members.

Together, we make this region stronger, more resilient, and truly connected.
