“Be consistent in your calf protocols. Colostrum is a big thing. Get it in right away and supplement it as needed with frozen colostrum and/or products like Sync Paste. We feed fresh colostrum to our calves, and it is often an hour or more before they get their first feeding. I give Sync Paste first thing, it helps to begin gut colonization, and they are more eager to eat their first meal of real colostrum.”- Holly Tuman

Wellness Wednesday: Decreased quality and quantity of production as a result of a mastitis infection results in approximately $35 billion in annual losses worldwide. Antibiotic therapy is still considered the most effective way to treat mastitis. Recent discoveries involving the gut microbiome gut and mammary axis may prove helpful in preventing mastitis infection and have the potential to prove to be an effective alternative therapy to antimicrobial use.

Wellness Wednesday: The gastrointestinal (GIT) microbiota play a major role in the function of the reproductive system. Recent research suggests that the GIT aids in the colonization of the uterine microbiota and that both microbial populations interact. Given the importance of reproductive health for livestock production, further understanding of this connection between the GIT and the reproductive tract may prove to majorly impact livestock reproductive efficiency.

NEW BLOG: One of the more recently discovered gut-organ connections is the gut-lung axis. Originally lungs were thought to be sterile unless an infection was present. This was due mostly to the fact that researchers were not able to culture microbes from the lungs of healthy animals. Click the link to read more!

Wellness Wednesday: Signaling between the lungs and the gut is bidirectional, however, most of the communication travels from the gut to the lungs. Research has shown that dietary supplementation can influence GIT microbiota, which also influences the lung microbiota. The inclusion of essential minerals, prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics will enhance immune function, mitigate the effects of stress, and prove useful in the reduction of respiratory disease.

Wellness Wednesday: The Gut-Brain connection is one of the most studied gut-organ axes in mammalian species. Microbes in the gastrointestinal tract play a critical role in brain processes including: brain development, neural processes, pain processes, HPA axis, and animal behavior. We can apply this knowledge as a tool in modulating brain function and overall animal health.
