Did yall know we sell the very same mushroom from The Last Of Us? Cordyceps Militaris propagates by colonizing within the dead bodies of insects, then zombifies their body into traveling to optimal fruiting conditions. (Typically within or above the tree line where they can get sunlight.) Sure enough they grow great on pasteurized grain too, even though we would like to zombify everyone who has been mean to us on TikTok. They have an incredibly bright and nutty umami flavor, like the concentrated taste of a shiitake or portobello. Sprinkled on top of food or steeped into a hot tea, they taste amazing. Not to mention prolonged consumption will improve your energy levels and make your exercise more effective! Explains why those little freaks from that show ran so fast.

For indigenous people's day, we wanted to share some depictions of mushrooms in Aztec and Mayan art dating back as early as 1000 BC. Mushrooms held great significance in Mesoamerican religious practices, which are serving as a blueprint for modern entheogenic therapy.

Pictured here is a 16th century statue of the Aztec god of art, dance, and flowers, Xochipilli, featuring several depictions of mushrooms and flowers. Following are the Mayan mushroom stones, which were present for religious ceremonies thousands of years ago.

Ancient depictions of mushrooms from cultures across the world is a truly astounding rabbit hole to dive into. We encourage all our myco-lovers to explore the rich history of fungi, its present day applications, and the natives who made it possible.

Here's how powerful cordyceps are. Pictured here is the '93 Chinese Olympic running team. That year they broke 3 world records, with the 10k meter record being cut by 42 seconds. Accusations of steroids came down hard, to which the entire team tested clean. According to the coach, the entire team had been taking cordyceps throughout their training.

How could a mushroom have such a dramatic effect on performance? Extensive testing has shown that prolonged intake of cordyceps come with a positive effect on one's VO2 max, a metric used to calculate cardiovascular health. This determines how effectively oxygen is absorbed into blood during physical activity, which controls energy output and duration until exhaustion.

Important to note that the cordyceps didn't win gold. The runners did. The effects of cordyceps are best realized alongside a healthy, active lifestyle. It takes determination and consistency to build yourself, which comes through what you give your body to grow. We're happy to offer that step to your fitness goals with locally grown cordyceps mushrooms and tinctures

We know there are cheaper mushroom grow kits out there, and we understand why someone would be hesitant to get a costly kit, especially if they're just curious about growing or have never grown before. We remember those days too; when we grew our first successful flush, that wonder touched us so deeply that we dedicated our services around giving people that same first experience. That's why we a offer a helpline with our grow kits. An email is included in the kit where we will answer any question, offer any advice, until you have beautiful mushrooms growing in your home. First flush guaranteed. Not to mention our grow kits are twice the size of an average kit, and will grow enough mushrooms to feed a family a few times over. We're honored to help you on your mycology journey.

After our incolucated grain has been introduced to some tasty substrate, mycelium begins feeding and colonizing throughout the bag. How long this takes varies between mushrooms, with oysters taking about 2 weeks and reishi taking 12 or longer. Once the mycelium has had a full meal, it will be ready to sprout mushrooms. We cut slits into the bag to allow moisture and fresh air to reach the block without overexposing the surface and risking contamination. The mycelium, which otherwise would've grown mushroom pins throughout the bag, will detect the moisture on the slits and direct all of its mushroom energy out through the opening. At this point they've been moved into one of our grow rooms, which are humidified and conditioned for specific mushroom varieties. After a few weeks of TLC, we're met with a beautiful first flush of mushrooms. With continued care in the grow room, these blocks can grow a second flush, sometimes even a third!

After the blocks have been cooked, we bring them into the lab. The room is filled with flow hoods, slow blowing fans lined with filters which catch any particles from entering the bags. Now that they can be safely opened, we fill the bags with oats that have been inoculated with mycelium, the fungal body that grows mushrooms. The bags are then sealed tight and mixed, making sure the mycelium can reach every corner of the substrate in the bags. In the next few weeks the mycelium will colonize throughout the bags, then after a hearty meal they'll be ready to grow mushrooms. Part three on the way!

A riveting mushroom race!

09/17/2024

The first step to growing mushrooms is preparing our substrate, i.e. the material which the mycelium will eat before blooming some beautiful caps. We use what's called the master's mix, a blend of oak wood, soy hulls, and water. We pour this mix into bags with a permeable air filter, which allows fresh air exchange but keeps contaminants out. Once sealed tight in their bags, we steam cook them to get them sterile and ready for lab where the mycology begins. Stay posted for part 2!

Fall has all the perfect conditions for mushrooms and then some. Here's why spooky season and spore season are one in the same:

-Temperature. Before mushrooms start to pin, mycelial roots need to spread throughout the ground and trees. This happens best at 65-75°, growing faster on the warmer side. This temp window sits right at the tail end of summer (like now!) meaning mycelium gets to grow for a few weeks before fall officially kicks off.
-Moisture. This is the absolute bread and butter of mushroom growth. They prefer humidity above 80%, which is why they grow so much in the spring too. Average fall humidity (between all states) sits around 40-50%, but fall mushrooms also get a lot of their moisture from the trees. After a summer of nonstop photosynthesis, the chill weather makes trees dormant, slowing the movement of their nutrient bounty. Tree bark begins to tense too, that combined with the tree's still water creates the perfect ground for pins.
-Food. The colors of fall are a result of decomposing plants. The mat of leaves on the ground coupled with corroding logs makes a feast for saprotrophic mushrooms, meaning mushrooms that feast on decaying matter. Some examples of saprotrophs include oysters, shiitake, chicken of the woods, and puffballs.

We wish you best of luck in your fall foraging! And if you get tired of digging around, we'll have some local grown mushrooms for you.
