It’s been one week since I lost you and the pain is still greater than I had ever imagined it.

We had found the cancer earlier this month but you were doing so good. You moved slower, sure, but I was still waiting for symptoms. I thought I had months left with you, maybe weeks, but I never imagined days. Looking back now, I’m not sure why I thought more time was guaranteed.

That being said, I had thought about our last day together many many times over the years. You have to when you have an old dog.

I was prepared.

I knew two things about saying goodbye to you, that it would ruin my life and that we’d do it at our home. Because taking you to the vet was like entering the depths of a gladiator pit. I didn’t want that for your last moments. I thought I could make it peaceful and beautiful for us both.

I was prepared.

I didn’t want you to be scared or know it was coming. I wanted to hold you and I wanted to let you try chocolate and grab your fur and smell your paws and I truly thought...

I was prepared.

I wanted to have a spot picked out under the tree for you to rest. I wanted to have a stamp of your paw print and a little tuff of your white and brown hair. I wanted to have an album of happier times ready to look back on when I was sad.

I was prepared.

I never pictured I’d be boarding a plane getting that unthinkable call and having to make an even more unthinkable decision so far away from you. I truly never imagined this happening without me there.
I was prepared… but I wasn’t ready. But can you ever be ready to say goodbye to your best friend?

I want to write more about the wonderful dog you were and the wonderful life we lived together. You deserve that. But right now, I’m just too sad. Maybe one day, when I’m more prepared.

I know our 13 years together are more important than your last moments but it doesn’t make this pain any less real.
I know you wouldn’t understand but that doesn’t make me understand it any better.
I know you wouldn’t want me to hurt, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less.
I know I gave you a great life but it doesn’t make this guilt fade away.
It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.

DESPERATELY SEEKING A FOSTER for Shrek and Fiona 🩵🩷

Their foster goes out of town soon and we’ve reached out to multiple rescues and been desperately searching for a new foster to take them in with no luck. If you could consider fostering these guys for a week PLEASE MESSAGE ME!! Could be a great project for a kid home for the summer or if you want to see if your family is ready for a dog without the commitment of actually adopting. I own a training business called Wise Tails Academy and can also offer some free lessons to whoever adopts as well as discounted future boarding.

4 weeks ago someone posted in Friends of Spicewood about witnessing a litter of 4 week old puppies being abandoned in a Walmart parking lot 💔 Some friends and I stepped in to try and save these babies but they were in rough shape and unfortunately one died the first night they were rescued. After multiple vet visits, a couple rounds of dewormer and their first round of vaccines given two weeks ago these sweet souls are healthy and ready for their forever homes!

Did you know 300,000 pets are bit by venomous snakes every year? The rattlesnake vaccine really only you allows enough time to get to the vet where you can then expect to pay around $3000 to have your dog treated! We have a ton of clients that have run ins with snakes that live in suburban areas than we do that live “in the country” or out on a ranch. When it starts to warm up snakes really like to hide out by your AC units 😳
This snake avoidance training involves using LIVE Rattlesnakes that have been rendered harmless by removing the fangs and taping the mouth shut so the safety of your dog can be ensured. Using real snakes is absolutely the best way to mimic a real-life encounter! This is our third year to do this and I can tell you 95% of dogs stick their face right on the snake when they see it. Had it been a real life scenario, the dogs would have been bit!

Under the supervision of a trained professional, the dogs are introduced to the sound, smell and sight of the snakes. At a precise moment the dog alerts and shows an interest on these senses, heavy pressure is applied with an e-collar. The pressure from the e-collar is immediately let off when the dog turns away from the dangerous snake. The dogs associate the snake with delivering the correction and learn that looking at the snake is bad and getting away from the snake is great!

The dogs will be handled by the trainer and entire process takes about 15 minutes, although we don’t end the session until we are sure dog has an understanding to avoid the snake. Dogs must be at least 8 months old.

The cost for the Snake Avoidance Seminar is $90 per dog and is open to Wise Tails Academy clients and non-clients, as well as rescue groups, hunting dogs, and all household pet dogs.

Our snake avoidance clinic will be held on Saturday March 30th from 8 until 2pm. Although if we have enough people sign up we may continue into late afternoon. This will be the ONLY day we offer this class ALL year.

I’m sure many of you have heard about this mystery illness going around. First, don’t panic! As of now there are no reported cases in Texas, but we should still all be cautious and on the lookout!

Wise Tails Academy is a VERY small operation and we will still be open for boarding or daycare. We sanitize daily with veterinarian grade disinfectants in our kennel room, crates and our turf yards. As always, any dogs with any symptoms that could be contagious will be sent home immediately.

We ask that if you would like your dog to still be able to come here to please avoid any dog parks (but like duh, always), doggy daycare or boarding at other facilities, and large grooming facilities. If you have a poodle or poodle mix that we require them to be cut short before they arrive, we can do the groom ourselves. If you did board your dog somewhere other than with us for Thanksgiving or if they traveled to any of the infected states over the holiday then they will need to be in a two week quarantine before they are allowed to come for Christmas boarding. Please reach out to us to ask more about this quarantine.

If you aren’t already doing so we recommend feeding your dog a well balanced diet with a high quality food and consider adding probiotics into your dog’s diet. As well as focusing on overall healthy of your dog and making sure they are the appropriate weight.

Although the media is doing a great job of scaring everyone the biggest advice I have is just to be careful but NOT to panic! Believe it or not, new viruses like this are coming around every few years and although we can’t predict the future, we feel like this too will pass. Most cases aren’t documented because most dogs do heal on their own.

Lastly, if you notice your dogs experience any respiratory problems or notice anything out of the norm for them please contact your vet right away! If you’re local, we love !

🐾 Small business where we primarily do board and trains and follow up lessons after the dog has completed a board and train
🐾 Flexible hours. Would be great for someone who is in the dog sport world and still wants the freedom to travel and take time off to compete
🐾 If relocating, living quarters could possibly be discussed
🐾 Our focus has been and will always be dog training and behavior modification so attention to detail is a must.
🐾 Pay will depend on experience. If you do not have experience training dogs yet but want to learn, we also have a kennel tech position available. You will be responsible for exercising, feeding, bathing/grooming and health checking the canines as well as keeping the kennels, facility grounds and common areas clean. You also need to be able to physically keep up in order to keep up with our active canines. Must be able to lift 50lbs and stand/walk for long periods of time. Must be confident in handling high drive dogs.

Current employee is a full time trainer who is moving is also happy to talk to anyone about the position as well!

Hi everyone! As y’all know, we don’t take weekends or holidays off here at Wise Tails Academy and it’s that time of year where we take some time off to ourselves! We will be out of the country this trip and will be unreachable. The good news is that this year we won’t be closing down entirely and our staff will still be around and we will be open for boarding for our graduates!

At times we may still be active and posting our pup graduates from the past few months, but will not be available to answer questions or for scheduling future training until we return. A local restaurant giving back to the pups! If you’ve ever been to Wise Tails Academy you know about our handout with directions and rules. One of which goes over being on time for appointments and that if you do find yourself early, to grab a snack or drink at Angels 🙂
