Next up in our Holiday Hazards series, we're talking holiday decorations!

Sparkling holiday decorations are beautiful, but they can be a hazard for pets! Avoid letting your pet chew on tinsel, string lights, or breakable ornaments. These can cause serious injuries if swallowed.

Candles can set a beautiful mood, but can be knocked over by the swish of a dog's tail or by a curious cat's paw. Pets tampering with candles can also cause your pet's fur to catch fire! Make sure any lit candles are closely monitored and kept out of your pet's reach.

Stay safe and holiday-ready!

Can you believe it’s almost that time again?

With the clocks rolling back, our routines may adapt quickly, but our pets might take a little longer to adjust! Animals thrive on routines, so even a one-hour shift can throw off their schedule, leading to restlessness or early wake-ups.

Here are a few tips to make the transition smoother:

1. Adjust Gradually – If possible, shift feeding, walk, and bedtime routines by 10-15 minutes each day leading up to the time change. This gradual approach can help your pet adapt without too much stress.

2. Stick to the New Schedule – Once the time has changed, try to stay consistent with the new routine to reinforce the shift.

3. Extra Playtime & Exercise – A little more exercise or play can help wear out your pet, making it easier for them to rest through the shift.

4. Be Patient – Your pet may need a week or two to fully adjust. Keep an eye on any changes in mood or behavior and be understanding if they’re a bit out of sorts.

Let’s help our furry friends settle into the new rhythm! 🐶🐱

October is Pet Obesity Month! We are continuing our series of posts about pet obesity, and today we are here to give you a few tips and tricks on what to look for to determine if your pet may be obese!

The most reliable way to evaluate your dog’s body condition is with a hands-on examination. There are three key areas of the body to evaluate.

For dogs:

Just behind the shoulder blades, you should be able to feel individual ribs easily with the flats of your fingers.
At the end of the rib cage, where the lower back begins, you should feel a clear indentation - like the shape of an hourglass - on each of your dog’s sides.
When viewing your dog from the side, the waist (between the rib cage and hips) should look “tucked up”. There should be no sagging belly or tummy.
If all these criteria are met, odds are strong that your dog is in good body condition, which can directly contribute to a pain-free lifestyle.

For cats:

Just behind the shoulder blades, you should be able to feel individual ribs easily with the flats of your fingers.
At the end of the rib cage, where the lower back begins, you should feel a clear indentation – like the shape of an hourglass - on each of your cat’s sides.
Although some cats have a fold of skin that droops between the rear legs, the waist (between the rib cage and hips) should feel “tucked up”.
If all these criteria are met, odds are strong that your cat is in good body condition, which can directly contribute to a pain-free lifestyle.

It's hard to leave your pets at home when you have errands to run, but being separated could cause your pet to become overly anxious. It's important to be aware of separation anxiety to help your pet overcome it.

Make sure to schedule an appointment with your VCA veterinarian to discuss how to handle your pet's separation anxiety.
